Press release No.046 / 2010-02-09

Every tenth Canadian has German roots

WIESBADEN – About 3.2 million of the total of 32.6 million Canadians indicated in the last Canadian population census in 2006 to be of ethnic German origin. Those data of the Canadian statistical office are published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the Olympic winter games to take place in Vancouver from 12 to 28 February 2010. According to those figures, German was the fifth most frequent foreign ethnic origin, following English (6.6 million), French (4.9 million), Scottish (4.7 million) and Irish (4.4 million).

According to the definition of the Canadian statistical office, a person’s ethnic origin is defined by the cultural background of his/her ancestors and his/her subjective awareness of that origin. Many people have more than one ethnic origin.
