January 2010: Decrease in employment remaining moderate

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 39.8 million in January 2010. Compared with January 2009, that was a decrease of 154,000 persons or 0.4%. Considering the generally weak economy, the year-on-year decrease in the number of persons in employment can thus be still described as moderate.

Compared with December 2009, the number of persons in employment fell by 543,000 or 1.3% in January 2010. A decrease of that size from December to January is in line with the usual seasonal pattern in the winter break. After seasonal adjustment, that is after elimination of the typical seasonal variations, even a slight increase of 20,000 persons (+0.0%) on December 2009 is obtained.
