More used cars exported to West Africa despite green rebate
WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional results, a total of 389,200 used passenger cars to the overall value of Euro 4,508.6 million were exported in 2009. Compared with 2008, exports of used cars fell by 68,500 cars (–15.0%). Despite a green rebate, colloquially also called scrapping premium, exports of used cars to Africa rose by 12,700 to a total of 79,600 cars (+19.1%). In terms of total German exports, every fifth used car was destined for Africa. At about Euro 2,200, the value of a used car delivered to Africa was comparably low also in 2009. In comparison, the average value of used cars exported to Americawas Euro 29,200, of those delivered to Europe Euro 16,600 and of used cars destined for Asia Euro 3,900. Main purchasers in Africa were the West African countries of Beninwith 28,800 cars (+28.0% against 2008) and Nigeriawith 18,500 cars (+25.1%). Due to the trade routes of the shipping companies, these two countries are regarded as important destinations of used vehicles shipped from German ports to West Africa.
