Inland waterways transport declining nearly 17% in 2009

WIESBADEN – According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), goods transport on inland waterways dropped not less than 16.8% in Germany in 2009. Compared to 2008, the volume of goods carried declined by 41.2 million tonnes to 204.5 million tonnes. In the course of the year, however, a certain recovery process became visible: In November 2009, the decline on the same month a year earlier was only in the single-digit range (–9.7%), while in December an increase of just under 5% was for the first time recorded in 2009. In the previous months, the decreases had been partly higher than 25%. In making such comparisons, however, it should be noted that the results for November and December 2008 were already affected by the economic crisis.
