As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the monthly agreed earnings of employees in Germany increased an average 2.4% between January 2008 and January 2009. As some pay settlements included an increase in weekly working hours, too, the rise in agreed hourly earnings amounted to not more than 2.2%. By way of comparison, consumer prices were up 0.9% in Germany in January 2009 on a year earlier.

According to results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a full-time employee in industry and services in Germany earned a gross EUR 3,127 on average per month in the fourth quarter of 2008. That was 2.5% more than in the fourth quarter of 2007. Over the same period, the consumer price index was up 1.7%, so that the increase of consumer prices was by 0.8 percentage points smaller than that of earnings. In the former territory of the Federal Republic , average gross monthly earnings amounted to EUR 3,246 (+2.4%), in the new Länder EUR 2,366 (+2.7%).

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in the fourth quarter of 2008 employers in the industry and in the entire service sector paid a calendar-adjusted 3.9% more for one hour worked than in the same quarter a year earlier. This is the highest quarterly increase in a year-on-year comparison since 1997, the first year for which labour cost indices were computed in Germany. Compared with the third quarter of 2008, the costs of one hour worked rose by a seasonally and calendar-adjusted 1.7%. In the whole year of 2008, labour costs per hour worked increased by 2.3%, which is the highest rise since 2001.

Compared with an increase of 3.4% in 1996 this was the largest rise for more than 10 years. The index of negotiated hourly wages of wage earners in trade, production industries, public authorities, transport, storage and communication equally saw the strongest growth since 1996 by an increase of 3.1%.

That was 3.0% more than in the third quarter of 2007. In the former territory of the Federal Republic, average gross monthly earnings amounted to EUR 3,224 (+2.9%), in the new Länder EUR 2,355 (+3.4%). Over the same period, the consumer price index rose by 3.1%; hence, its increase was by 0.1 percentage points larger than that of all-German earnings.

The overall raw material productivity in Germany in 2007 was by 35.4% higher than in 1994. This is one of the results shown in the new indicator report on sustainable development of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). One of the targets of the national sustainability strategy for Germany is that the raw material productivity should double from 1994 to 2020. To achieve that goal, the development speed of the raw material indicator would have to increase considerably compared with the last few years.

The two main components of labour costs showed different trends: Gross wages and salaries were up 1.6%. The 0.3% decrease in non-wage costs, however, had a downward effect. This reflects especially the reduction of the employers’ contribution rate for unemployment insurance from 2.10% to 1.65% on 1 January 2008. Compared with the previous quarter, labour costs remained unchanged when seasonally and calendar-adjusted (–0.0%).

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), full-time employees in industry, wholesale and retail trade and financial intermediation earned an average amount of EUR 64.41 from gross earnings of EUR 100 in 2006, after the deduction of wage tax and social security contributions. This roughly corresponds with the survey results for 1995 and 2001 (EUR 65.23 and EUR 64.77, respectively). The social security contribution rates for employees rose from 19.7% in 1995 to 20.4% in 2001 and to 21.4% in 2006.

Compared with the other European countries, the level of labour costs in Germany was seventh after Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and the Netherlands. Denmark recorded the highest labour costs per hour worked with EU 35.00 and Bulgaria the lowest with EUR 2.10.
