28 million households in Germany have broadband internet access

Press release No. 474 / 2011-12-19  In 2011, 77% of the households in Germany has internet access, the majority of which (93 %) had a fast internet access (broadband connection). As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 28 million households had fast internet access.


Enterprises taking account of climate protection when using information technology

Press release No. 446 / 2011-12-05  63% of the enterprises with 10 or more employees in Germany take measures to improve the energy efficiency and to protect the climate when using information technology (IT). This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the “Sixth National IT Summit” to take place in Munich on 6 December 2011.


Never been online: One in six in Germany, one in four across the EU

Press release No. 319 / 2011-09-05  In Germany, 17% of the population aged between 16 and 74 years have never used the internet. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden, it is particularly older people that have no internet experience. In the age group from 55 to 74 years, 42% have never been online. In the younger age groups, however, the percentage was under 10%. The data were collected in 2010.


Large increase in internet use via mobile phones in 2010

Press release No. 060 / 2011-02-14  In 2010, 16% of the internet users went online via their mobile phones. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), mobile internet use rose by 78% compared with a year earlier. In 2009, the proportion of users accessing the internet via mobile phones had been no more than 9%.


11% of enterprises have IT security problems

Press release No. 448 / 2010-12-06  11% of the enterprises with ten or more persons employed in Germany were affected by acute security problems in connection with their information and communication systems in 2009. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the Fifth National IT Summit in Dresdenon 7 December 2010.



Proportion of businesses selling online has doubled

Press release No. 399 / 2010-11-03  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the proportion of businesses in Germany that sell products or services not only through conventional distribution channels but also through the internet or other computer-based networks rose significantly in 2009. Almost every fourth business (23%) used the potentials of the internet for distribution purposes, which means that the proportion more than doubled within a year (2008: 11%).


Internet radio and TV popular especially among young adults

Press release No. 296 / 2010-08-26  Listening to the radio and watching TV via internet is popular among private users in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the Internationale Funkausstellung (international consumer electronics trade fair) in Berlin (3 to 8 September 2010), internet radio and internet TV were particularly popular among the 16 to 24 year olds: In that age group, about 45% of all users used such offers in the first quarter of 2009. A year earlier, the share was 41%.


Number of businesses selling their products online continues to be small

Press release No. 070 / 2010-03-01  Not more than a good 11% of all businesses in Germany sold at least part of their goods or services through the internet or other computer-based channels in 2008. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the CeBIT (Centrum für Büroautomation, Informationstechnologie und Telekommunikation) trade fair, which will take place in Hannover from 2 to 6 March, the proportion of businesses taking part in online sales had thus remained at almost the same level for a couple of years. In particular smaller businesses were hesitant to sell their products through electronic channels: Just under 11% of the companies employing one to nine persons made use of that distribution channel. However, nearly 19% of the businesses with ten or more staff indicated electronic sales in 2008.


Electronic services of public authorities gaining acceptance

Press release No. 498 / 2009-12-18  More than half of the businesses with Internet access in Germany meanwhile communicate electronically with the public administration. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis ), their share has amounted to 53% in 2009, these are 21 percentage points more than in 2003.


73% of households have internet access

Press release No. 464 / 2009-12-03  The number of households in Germany with internet access continues to increase. It rose from 27 million in 2008 to 29 million in 2009. These are the latest results of the surveys conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households. At present, 73% of the private households have internet access. In the previous year, this proportion stood at 69% and thus was four percentage points lower.


Increasing volume of sales in electronic trade

Press release No. 453 / 2009-11-26  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), about 12% of all businesses in Germany sold at least part of their goods or services through the internet or other electronic channels in 2008. Thus, in general, their proportion did not change since 2005. However, the volume of sales made through electronic distribution channels recorded an increase. The volume of sales of goods or services made by the businesses through electronic networks in 2008 amounted to not less than 39% of their total sales. In 2005, that share amounted to not more than 30%.


Listening to the radio and watching TV via internet is getting ever more popular

Press release No. 072 / 2009-03-02  14.2 million people in Germanylistened to the radio or watched TV via the internet for private purposes in the first quarter of 2008. Compared with the previous year (10.3 million), that is an increase by about 38%. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the CeBIT 2009 computer fair in Hanover (3 to 8 March 2009), this means that 19% of all persons aged ten years or over used the internet for radio and TV. In the same period of the previous year, the share was 14%.


Websites: 16% of enterprises offering interactive product design

Press release No. 069 / 2009-02-27  The enterprises in Germany now use their internet presence also to address their customers more individually. In 2008, as many as 16% of all enterprises with their own website offered their customers on the website the possibility of interactively designing the desired products according to their needs, for example regarding features or colour. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the CeBIT computer trade fair taking place in Hanover from 3 to 8 March. For 12% of the enterprises with their own website, the site also identified returning visitors, for example through cookies, and provided contents specially tailored to their profiles.


PC and Internet increasingly influence the professional and private life

Press release No. 452 / 2008-11-27  In Germany, modern information and communication ­technologies, above all computers and the Internet, play a growing part in the working and private lives of many people. This was the result of recent surveys conducted by the Federal Statistical Office among households and enterprises on the utilisation of information and communication technologies. The share of employees who regularly use a computer during working hours rose by 14 percentage points since January 2003 to about 60% in January 2008. In the private sphere, the share of persons from the age of ten who used a computer in the first quarter of the year was up to 76% in 2008 (2003: 64%). The intensity with which computers were used in households also increased over that period: while 62% of private users used their PC every day or almost every day in 2003, the share of such regular users was up to 75% in 2008.


IFA 2008: 27 million people shop on the Internet

Press release No. 316 / 2008-08-28  The Internet is becoming increasingly popular as a medium for private shopping: 27 million people from the age of ten ordered goods or services for private purposes via the Internet in the first quarter of 2007. Compared with the first quarter of 2006 when 25 million private online shoppers had been recorded that was an increase by almost 7%. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports on the occasion of the Internationale Funkausstellung ( international consumer electronics trade fair) in Berlin (29 August to 3 September 2008), well above half (53%) of the 51 million private Internet users of the first quarter of 2007 thus used the World Wide Web as a shopping medium.


Rapid increase of mobile internet use by enterprises

Press release No. 163 / 2008-04-24  The number of enterprises with a mobile internet access more than tripled in 2007 against 2006. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), about 21% of the enterprises with an internet connection used a mobile connection to the World Wide Web in addition to their fixed-line or DSL access in 2007. In 2006 that share had still been 6%.


Retail trade: 18% of the businesses sell goods online

Press release No. 519 / 2007-12-20  Be it books, clothing or electronic products, an increasing number of retail businesses in Germanysell goods via the internet. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, about 18% of all retail businesses sold goods in 2006 using this distribution channel which is not tied to specific locations. As compared to 2004, this was an increase of seven percentage points.


Nearly 70% of the population aged 10 years and above using the internet

Press release No. 486 / 2007-11-30  The internet has become part and parcel of everyday life of an increasing number of people in this country. A total of 68% of the population from 10 years of age used the internet in Germanyin the first quarter of 2007. As their share amounted to 65% in the first quarter of 2006, the year-on-year increase totalled three percentage points. This was the result of a survey conducted by the Federal Statistical Office among households on the utilisation of information and communication technologies. Hence the share of internet users (68%) only was by six percentage points smaller than the proportion of persons aged ten years and above who actually used a computer during that period (74%). Within the group of internet users, 61% went online either every day or almost every day in the first quarter of 2007, whereas the relevant proportion amounted to 56% in the same period a year earlier.


Nearly 50% of businesses conducting administrative matters online

Press release No. 477 / 2007-11-27  The number of businesses in Germanywhich make use of the opportunity to conduct their administrative matters online has continuously increased. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, about 49% of the businesses with internet access have used the online services offered by the public sector in 2007. Hence the share of e-government users has increased by 18 percentage points on 2003.


25 million people purchasing via the internet

Press release No. 341 / 2007-08-29  25 million people in Germanyordered goods or services via the internet in the 1st quarter of 2006. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the Internationale Funkausstellung (international consumer electronics trade fair) in Berlin (31 August to 5 September 2007), that was 52% of private internet users purchasing online. The internet is thus getting ever more popular as a medium for private shopping. The share of internet users shopping online in all private internet users increased continuously by 19 percentage points since 2002 (33%).


About 30% of businesses and citizens use the internet when contacting authorities

Press release No. 200 / 2007-05-14  The internet as a medium of communication with the public administration plays an important role for businesses and citizens in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the World Telecommunication Day on 17 May 2007, about 33% of German businesses used the internet for communication with the public administration in 2006. The situation is similar for citizens. In the first quarter of 2006, 28% of the people aged 10 years and over in Germany made use of internet-based services provided by authorities or public institutions.


56% of internet users are online every day or almost every day

Press release No. 079 / 2007-02-27  Use of the internet in Germany has further increased. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office from the current evaluation of the survey of households on the use of information and communication technologies, nearly two thirds (65%) of persons from the age of ten used the internet in the first quarter of 2006. The share of internet users thus rose by four percentage points compared with 2005 (61%). Within the group of internet users, more than half (56%) went online every day or almost every day in the first quarter of 2006, whereas one year earlier it was 50% of internet users.


ICT share in gross domestic product now at 6.8%

Press release No. 71 / 2006-02-21  The overall economic importance of information and communication technologies (ICT) has considerably grown over the last few years: The share of ICT (demand for ICT goods and services) in the German gross domestic product rose from 4.7% in 1995 to 6.8% in 2004.


Communication via e-mail increasingly popular

Press release No. 221 / 2005-05-13  WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, using the internet to exchange private e-mails is becoming increasingly popular. Almost half of the population (47%) from the age of 10 used the internet to send or receive “electronic mails” in the first quarter of 2004; in 2002, the share had still been 35%.


Internet use by elderly people grows above average

Press release No. 179 / 2005-04-18  WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, the use of the internet in the German population for either job-related or private purposes is further increasing. This is true not only of young people but also – though on a much lower level – of the elderly: 22% of those aged over 54 went online in the first quarter of 2004, while in 2002 the figure was just 16%. For comparison: Among the total population from the age of ten, 58% used the internet. The increase among elderly people (+38%) is clearly above the growth rate for the population aged 10 and over (+26% on 2002).

Ever more households with PCs, saturation for mobile phones

Press release No. 540 / 2004-12-21  WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, 64% of the households (excluding households of self-employed and of farmers) had a PC at the beginning of 2004. In 2000, the figure was 47% of the households.This is shown by the results of the continuous household budget surveys 2004.


Current figures on information and communication

Press release No. 422 / 2004-10-05  WIESBADEN – Information and communication technologies (ICT) are not only widespread in the businesses and sciences but have for a long time already been part of every household's equipment, thus determining our everyday life. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, pupils aged 10 years or over already spend good 5 1/2 per week on PC activities at home. Even in the age class of 65 years and over, about 11% of the citizens use the Internet, for example, to do online shopping, online banking, or to search for information.


Germans ranking in the middle of Europeans as regards Internet use

Press release No. 326 / 2004-08-05  38 million people were online in Germany in the first quarter of 2003, that is 52% of the population from the age of ten. A year earlier, the figure was 46%. This means that Germany is somewhere in the middle of the European countries. In Denmark and Sweden, over 70% of all persons over 16 years use the Internet, whereas in Italy 29% and Spain 37%, in Greece only 16%. This is shown by the European survey on the use of information and communication technology in households in 2003, whose results have now been presented by the Federal Statistical Office.


80% of businesses using computers in 2003
