More than 40% of people employed in accommodation and food services working part time

Press release No. 049 / 2012-02-10  In 2010, the main activity of a total of 1.49 million people was in accommodation and food services. A share of 41.4% of them worked part time. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on results of the microcensus on the occasion of the International trade fair for hotels, restaurants, catering, confectionery and café (INTERGASTRA), which will take place in Stuttgart from 11 February 2012.


December 2011: Number of persons in employment remaining over 41 million

Press release No. 036 / 2012-01-31  The positive development in the labour market continued in December 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany(41.4 million) exceeded the 41 million mark again in December 2011. The number of unemployed was about 2.34 million in December 2011, which was some 420,000 less than in December 2010.


November 2011: employment remaining at high level

Press release No. 002 / 2012-01-03  The positive trend of employment and unemployment in Germany continued in November 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany reached another record high (41.6 million). The number of unemployed amounted to some 2.36 million in November 2011. That was a decline of about 310,000 on November 2010.


More than 41 million persons in employment for the first time in 2011

Press release No. 001 / 2012-01-02  In 2011 there were an average of approximately 41.04 million persons in employment whose place of residence is in Germany. According to first preliminary calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 41-million threshold was thus exceeded for the first time in 2011 and the previous record employment level reached in the previous year was markedly exceeded, too, that is, by 535,000 persons or 1.3%. That positive development is connected with the short-term economic upswing that has continued for two years and, in addition, was supported by the fact that the number of persons in employment in 2009 had remained stable despite the slump in economic performance in Germany caused by the financial crisis.


October 2011: number of persons in employment increasing to 41.5 million

Press release No. 440 / 2011-11-30  The positive trend on the labour market in Germany continued in October 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany reached another record high (41.5 million). However, the year-on-year increase recorded in October 2011 was slightly lower than in the months before.


Inflexible working hours for nearly 60% of the employees

Press release No. 439 / 2011-11-29  Inflexible working time models, precisely defining both the daily working hours and the start/end times for employees, prevailed on the German labour market in 2010. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of the 2010 labour force survey, 58.1% of the employees worked according to such a working time model in their main activity.


More than 41 million persons in employment in the 3rd quarter of 2011

Press release No. 424 / 2011-11-17  In the third quarter of 2011, the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany amounted to about 41.2 million, which was an increase of 495,000 people or 1.2% on a year earlier. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this figure reflected the highest level of employment since German unification. However, the increase was smaller than in the first quarter (+1.4%) and in the second quarter of 2011 (+1.3%).


Unused labour supply: 8.4 million people would like to work (more)

Press release No. 416 / 2011-11-10  According to results of the labour force survey, about 8.4 million people aged 15 to 74 years wished to have a job or to do more working hours in 2010. Compared with the previous year, the number was down by 324,000 (–3.7%). This means that, despite the favourable labour market development, there is still considerable unused labour supply.


September 2011: employment reaching again record high

The positive trend on the labour market in Germany continued in September 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany reached another record high (about 41.31 million). The number of unemployed amounted to some 2.22 million in September 2011. That was a decline of about 524,000 on September 2010.


Labour market in August 2011: employment up again, unemployment down

Press release No. 361 / 2011-09-29  The positive development on the labour market in Germany continued in August 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany reached an all-time high (about 41.08 million). The number of unemployed was 2.50 million in August 2011, which was about 270,000 less than in August 2010.

Press release No. 311 / 2011-08-31  Employment and unemployment in Germany continued their favourable year-on-year trends in July 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to a good 41 million, which was over half a million more than a year earlier. The number of unemployed was 2.58 million in July 2011, which was about 300,000 less than in July 2010.

According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this figure reflected the highest level of employment in any second quarter since German unification.


Youth unemployment in Germany is one of the lowest in the EU

Press release No. 293 / 2011-08-11  In June 2011, 9.1% or 430,000 young people aged 15 to 24 years were unemployed. That is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the International Youth Day on 12 August 2011.

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.9 million, which was almost half a million more than a year earlier. The number of unemployed was 2.57 million in June 2011.


Employment increase in 2010 largely due to temporary work

Press release No. 270 / 2011-07-19  In 2010, the number of people in atypical employment reached 7.84 million. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of microcensus results, the number increased by 243,000 persons compared with 2009. The total number of persons in dependent employment rose by 322,000 to 30.90 million from 2009 to 2010.

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.8 million, which was almost half a million more than a year earlier. In May 2011 the number of unemployed was 2.47 million.


Increasing labour force participation of older people

Press release No. 231 / 2011-06-20  The labour force participation of older people in Germany has considerably increased in the past few years. The employment/population ratio of the 55 to 64 year olds rose from 37% to 56% between 2000 and 2009. That increase was stronger than in any other age group. As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden, 4% of the population in Germany were in work even after reaching the age of 65.


Nearly 28% of managers are female – record level in 2010

Press release No. 215 / 2011-06-08  Nearly 28% of the leadership positions in private enterprises in Germany are held by women. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of microcensus results, the percentage of female bosses has increased over the last few years, reaching a record level of 27.7% in 2010. Nevertheless, the share of women in leadership positions is still markedly smaller than the total share of female persons employed (45.6%).

Press release No. 206 / 2011-05-31  Employment and unemployment in Germany continued their favourable trends in April 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.68 million, which was over half a million more than a year earlier.  2.54 million people were unemployed. This means that the unemployment rate was down to 6.0% in April 2011.

Press release No. 194 / 2011-05-19  In the first quarter of 2011, the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany amounted to about 40.4 million, which was an increase of 552,000 people or 1.4% on a year earlier. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.48 million, which was over half a million more than a year earlier. 2.73 million people were unemployed. This means that the unemployment rate was down to 6.5% in March 2011.


Employment up by 1.3 percent in February 2011

Press release No. 129 / 2011-03-31  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to about 40.25 million in February 2011. Compared with February 2010, that was an increase of 500,000 or 1.3%. March 2010 was the last month in which a decrease in employment was observed in comparison with the same month a year earlier. Since then, the year-on-year rate of change has risen continuously.


Young people in 2009: staying longer in education while entering working life at a later age

Press release No. 102 / 2011-03-14  Compared with 1999, young people entered the labour market at a later age and stayed longer in education or training in 2009. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this phenomenon was observed in particular among young people aged between 20 and 24 years. While 36.8% of that age group were employed in 2009, the relevant proportion amounted to 44.2% ten years earlier. Nearly half (47.9%) of all young people aged 20 to 24 were undergoing education or training in 2009. In 1999, however, the relevant proportion amounted to not more than 36.9% (slightly more than a third).


Employment remaining at a high level in January 2011

Press release No. 082 / 2011-03-01  In January 2011, the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to about 40.2 million. That was an increase of 466,000 or 1.2% on January 2010. According to first provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment in Germany for the first time exceeded the 41 million threshold in a January since German reunification.


4th quarter of 2010: for the first time more than 41 million persons in employment

Press release No. 064 / 2011-02-17  In the fourth quarter of 2010, the number of persons in employment whose place of residence was in Germany amounted to about 41.04 million, which was an increase of 422,000 people or 1.0% on a year earlier. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this figure reflected the highest level of employment in a quarter since German reunification and, for the first time, exceeded the 41 million threshold.


Employment once again on the rise in December 2010

Press release No. 045 / 2011-02-01  In December 2010, the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to about 40.8 million. That was an increase of 427,000 or 1.1% on December 2009. According to first provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was the highest level of persons in employment recorded in Germany in a December since German reunification.


November 2010: employment remaining at high level

Press release No. 002 / 2011-01-04  In November 2010, the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to about 40.92 million. According to first provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis ), that was an increase of 432,000 persons or 1.1% on November 2009. Hence, in reference month November 2010 – as was the case in the previous month – the number of persons in employment in Germany remained at a level never reached since German unification.


Number of persons in employment reaching record level in 2010

Press release No. 001 / 2011-01-03  The number of persons in employment whose place of residence is in Germany amounted to about 40.37 million on an annual average in 2010. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of first provisional results, that is an increase of 197,000 persons or 0.5% compared with a year earlier. Hence the number of persons in employment in Germany reached a record level in 2010. When examining that development, it should be taken into account that, despite the sharp fall in the gross domestic product in 2009, the number of persons in employment in 2009 had decreased rather moderately by 45,000 persons from the previous record level of 2008.


Women typically not stepping into male jobs – and vice versa

Press release No. 485 / 2010-12-22  Women and men continue to work in highly different occupations. The choice of occupation is based on rather traditional concepts. Changing into the domain of the other sex is still the exception rather than the rule. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of analyses of the microcensus.


October 2010: employment reaches new record high

Press release No. 438 / 2010-11-30  As a result of the autumn upturn, the number of persons in employment in Germany continued to increase in October 2010 and reached a new record high since German reunification. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on provisional results, the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to about 40.9 million in the reference month of October 2010. That was an increase of 405,000 persons or 1.0% compared with October 2009.


Employment rising by 0.8% in 3rd quarter of 2010 on the previous year

Press release No. 423 / 2010-11-18  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany amounted to about 40.65 million in the third quarter of 2010, which was an increase of 307,000 persons or 0.8% on a year earlier. In the second quarter of 2010 the increase had been 0.4%. Hence the rise in employment that have started in spring this year continued in the third quarter of 2010. That level shows the highest number of persons in employment in any third quarter since German unification.


September 2010: number of persons in employment continues to increase

Press release No. 389 / 2010-10-28  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment continued to increase in Germany in September 2010. According to provisional results, the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to about 40.7 million in the reference month of September 2010. Compared with September 2009, that was an increase of 355,000 persons or 0.9%. Hence, the upward trend observed in the preceding months has continued: In June 2010, the number of persons in employment was 0.6% higher than in the same month a year earlier, in July and August it was up by 0.7% and 0.8%, respectively.


August 2010: employment continues to increase

Press release No. 351 / 2010-09-30  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment increased in Germany in August 2010. According to provisional results, the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to about 40.3 million in the reference month (August 2010). Compared with August 2009, that was an increase of 196,000 persons or 0.5%. In the preceding months of May, June and July 2010, the number of persons in employment had been 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% higher, respectively, than in the same months a year earlier. Hence, the upward trend of employment has continued.


Every tenth person in employment with excessively long working hours – new report on the quality of work

Press release No. 347 / 2010-09-28  In 2009, just under ten percent of the persons in employment had excessively long working hours, that is more than 48 hours per week. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis ) on the occasion of releasing the indicator report on Qualität der Arbeit – Geld verdienen und was sonst noch zählt (Quality of work – earning money and what else counts). The limit of 48 weekly hours is based on the upper limit laid down in the Working Time Act. The working hours indicated are based on the respondents’ self-assessment given in the labour force survey.


More than every fifth person retires on health grounds

Press release No. 333 / 2010-09-21  More than every fifth person in retirement in 2009, or 22.7%, had retired from work on health grounds. This figure was published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) today. It is one of the results of a study on the transition of older people from work into retirement. Those who retired on health grounds in 2008 were well over 55 years old on average. Hence, they were about 8 ½ years younger than the people who went into normal old-age retirement. The data source for the study was the microcensus.


Employment in July 2010: continued growth on a year earlier

Press release No. 303 / 2010-08-31  According to first calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), employment in Germany increased again – as in the previous two months – in July 2010 on a year earlier. In July 2010, the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.2 million. Compared to July 2009, that was an increase of 141,000 or 0.4%. In May 2010 the number of persons in employment increased by 0.2% and in June 2010 by 0.3% on a year earlier.


2nd quarter of 2010: Employment returning to growth

Press release No. 288 / 2010-08-18  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany amounted to about 40.3 million in the second quarter of 2010, which was an increase of 72,000 persons or 0.2% on a year earlier. This means that there was a year-on-year rise in employment for the first time since the second quarter of 2009. That level shows the highest number of persons in employment in any second quarter since German unification and is quite close to the all-time high of 40.7 million achieved in the fourth quarter of 2008.


Almost every second person aged 15 to 24 in employment

Press release No. 281 / 2010-08-11  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden on the occasion of the International Youth Day, nearly 4.4 million persons aged 15 to 24 years were in employment in 2009. As shown by the microcensus results, almost every second juvenile or young adult (46.4%) hence was in employment last year.


Employment in June 2010: upward trend continues

Press release No. 266 / 2010-07-29  The labour market continues to show a positive employment trend. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.3 million in June 2010. Compared with June 2009, that was an increase of 131,000 persons or 0.3%. With a rise by 0.2%, in May 2010 the number of persons in employment was higher for the first time in twelve months than in the corresponding period of the previous year.


Atypical employment decreasing in crisis year 2009

Press release No. 257 / 2010-07-22  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of atypically employed persons was down by 130,000 to some 7.6 million in 2009 compared with 2008. That decrease by 1.7% is due to the reduction of fixed-term employment and temporary work. Those figures refer to persons in employment aged 15 to 64 years who are neither pupils / students nor undergoing vocational training.


May 2010: Employment on the rise again

Press release No. 227 / 2010-06-30  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.2 million in May 2010. Compared with May 2009, that was an increase of 60,000 persons or 0.1%. Hence, the number of persons in employment exceeded the corresponding figure for the previous year for the first time in twelve months, following a continuous slowdown in the decline of employment over the preceding six months.


8.6 million people with unfulfilled wish for (more) work

Press release No. 226 / 2010-06-29  In 2009, 8.6 million people aged 15 to 74 years wished to get work or more working hours. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of results of the labour force survey. That number consists of 4.2 million underemployed, 3.2 million unemployed and 1.2 million persons in the potential labour force.


April 2010: Employment benefits from spring recovery

Press release No. 193 / 2010-06-01  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 40.1 million in April 2010. Compared with April 2009, that was a decrease of 53,000 persons or 0.1%. In each of January and February 2010, the number of persons in employment had been 0.4%, in March it was 0.3% below the previous year’s level. Consequently, another slowdown was observed in the year-on-year decline of employment in the reference month of April 2010.


1st quarter 2010: Slower decline in employment

Press release No. 177 / 2010-05-19  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany amounted to about 39.8 million in the first quarter of 2010, which was a decline of 107,000 persons or 0.3% on a year earlier. Consequently, the decrease in employment has slowed down since the fourth quarter of 2009, when the number of persons in employment was lower by 158,000 or 0.4% than in the same period of the preceding year.


March 2010: Decline in employment slowing down

Press release No. 151 / 2010-04-29  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 39.9 million in March 2010. Compared with March 2009, that was a decrease of 138,000 persons or 0.3%. In January and February 2010, the number of persons in employment was 0.4% each below the previous year's level. Consequently, a somewhat slower year-on-year decrease in employment was observed in the reference month of March 2010.


Night work markedly decreasing in crisis year 2009

Press release No. 149 / 2010-04-28  In 2009 the number of persons working permanently or regularly at night was down by 10 percent on the previous year. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of Labour Day on 1 May and on the basis of first results of the microcensus 2009, the number of night workers was 3.2 million in 2009; in 2008 the number had been 3.54 million.


Employment in February 2010: 0.3% decline

Press release No. 123 / 2010-03-31  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germany amounted to 39.8 million in February 2010. Compared with February 2009, that was a decrease of 138 000 persons or 0.3%. In January 2010, the number of persons in employment had been 0.4% below the previous year's level. Consequently, a somewhat slower decrease in employment was observed in the reference month of February 2010 as compared with the preceding year.


Almost 9% of all employment contracts on a fixed-term basis in 2008

Press release No. 103 / 2010-03-16  Since 1991, the number of persons in employment with a fixed-term contract has never been higher in Germany than in 2008. This was reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of microcensus results. According to these figures, 2.7 million or 8.9% of the persons in employment aged 15 to under 65 years (excluding pupils and students with a spare time job, and apprentices) worked on a fixed-term basis in 2008. In 1991, the first year for which data were available for Germany after reunification, the corresponding rate was 5.7%.


January 2010: Decrease in employment remaining moderate

Press release No. 064 / 2010-02-25  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment living in Germanyamounted to 39.8 million in January 2010. Compared with January 2009, that was a decrease of 154,000 persons or 0.4%. Considering the generally weak economy, the year-on-year decrease in the number of persons in employment can thus be still described as moderate.


4th quarter of 2009: Continuing decline of employment

Press release No. 056 / 2010-02-18  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany amounted to about 40.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, which was a decline of 156 000 persons or 0.4% on a year earlier. Consequently, the decrease of employment continued and accelerated in the fourth quarter of 2009. In the third quarter of 2009, the number of persons in employment had dropped by 101 000 persons or 0.2% from a year earlier.
