Increase in household final consumption expenditure due to green rebate for cars in 2009

Press release No. 099 / 2010-03-12  Purchases of motor vehicles, which were promoted by a green rebate, made a considerable contribution to domestic demand in Germany in 2009. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), households in Germany spent some Euro 73 billion on purchasing new or used motor vehicles. Compared to 2008, this was an increase of one fifth (20.5%). The total final consumption expenditure of households rose slightly by 0.4% in 2009 on 2008. Without the purchases of motor vehicles, household final consumption expenditure would have been down by 0.5% in purely mathematical terms.


2009: Gross earnings falling for the first time since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded

Press release No. 074 / 2010-03-03  According to first results produced by national accounting at the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), average gross earnings of all employees in Germany fell by –0.4% to about Euro 27,648 in 2009. This is the first decline of earnings in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.


Government deficit ratio for 2009 amounting to 3.3%

Press release No. 062 / 2010-02-24  According to updated results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), net borrowing of general government amounted to Euro 79.3 billion in 2009. Measured as a percentage of gross domestic product at current prices (Euro 2,407.2 billion), a general government ratio of –3.3% was calculated for 2009. These data are based on the definitions of the European System of Accounts (ESA) 1995.

Germany experiencing serious recession in 2009

Press release No. 012 / 2010-01-13  The German economy shrank in 2009 for the first time in six years. With –5.0%, the decline in the price-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) was larger than ever since World War II. This is shown by first calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The economic slump occurred mainly in the winter half-year of 2008/2009. Over the year, there were signs that the economic development would slightly stabilise on the new, lower level. In 2008 the GDP had slightly been up by 1.3%, in 2007 by 2.5% and in 2006 even by 3.2%.

Press release No. 430 / 2009-11-13  The German economy continues to recover: As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the gross domestic product (GDP) in the third quarter of 2009 increased by 0.7% on the previous quarter upon price, seasonal and calendar adjustment. Following the heavy slump in the winter half-year, the slight upward trend of the economy observed in the second quarter (+0.4%) seems to continue.


1st half of 2009: Savings ratio unchanged from a year earlier (11.2%)

Press release No. 410 / 2009-10-29  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the World Savings Day on 30 October, the savings ratio of all households amounted to a seasonally adjusted 11.2% of their disposable income in the first six months of this year. A monthly average of EUR 180 was put aside per inhabitant, which was the same amount as in the previous year. The total saved by all households in the first half of 2008 amounted to EUR 89 billion.


Financial market stabilisation putting a EUR 3.3 billion burden on net lending/net borrowing balance of general government in 2008

Press release No. 402 / 2009-10-22  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, the stabilisation measures taken by the government to support financial institutes put a burden of EUR 3.3 billion on the balance of net lending/net borrowing of general government, as defined in national accounts, in 2008. Expenditure was influenced especially by government support in the form of new capital injection (about EUR 2.2 billion) and compensation for impaired assets (about EUR 1.5 billion). On the other side, there was revenue from charges and capital transfers received (private business participating in the support measures) to the amount of some EUR 350 million.


Average age of government buildings and structures increasing above average

Press release No. 342 / 2009-09-11  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the average age of government buildings and structures increased above average over the last few years. At the beginning of 1991, the age of public buildings and structures was an average 22 years, while at the beginning of 2009 it was 28 years. Hence their average age rose by about six years in the period examined. Over the same period, the increase in the average age of all buildings and structures in Germany was only half that, from just under 24 years to just under 27 years.


Stock of consumer durables in households amounting to nearly EUR one trillion

Press release No. 325 / 2009-09-03  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of national accounting results, households in Germany had consumer durables to the amount of almost EUR one trillion at the beginning of 2009. That was an average EUR 23,500 per household. Vehicles account for over one third of the stock of consumer durables, furniture and carpets for another third. The remaining stock of consumer durables comprises major electric household appliances, audiovisual, photographic and computer equipment as well as goods for communication, health, entertainment and leisure, jewellery, clocks and watches. Not contained are gold bars, coins, antiques and similar goods including part of jewellery used mainly as a store of value rather than as consumer durables.

General government deficit amounting to EUR 17.3 billion in the first half of 2009

Press release No. 311 / 2009-08-25  According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), net borrowing of general government amounted to EUR 17.3 billion in the first half of 2009. After a general government surplus of just over EUR 7 billion was recorded in the same period a year earlier, the economic and financial crisis had a substantial effect on the budgets of the Federation, Länder and municipalities and also on the social insurance budget. For the first time since 2004, a decline of 1.1% was observed in revenue, while general government expenditure increased 3.5% in the first six months of 2009.

Press release No. 133 / 2009-04-01  In the fourth quarter of last year, the economic situation deteriorated markedly in many parts of the world. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the coming summit of the group of the 20 leading developed and emerging economies (G20), the price-adjusted gross domestic product of many G20 countries in the fourth quarter of 2008 was smaller than in the fourth quarter of 2007. In all countries for which figures for the last quarter of 2008 were available, the year-on-year rates of change were markedly below those of the previous quarters.

Consumption expenditure in Germany much lower than in the United States of America

Press release No. 098 / 2009-03-13  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the International Consumer Day on 15 March, the level of average consumption expenditure in Germanyis considerably lower than in the United States of America. Expenditures were EUR 17 073 per inhabitant in Germanyin 2008 compared with EUR 22 457 in the United States.


General government recording a deficit of EUR 3.3 billion in 2008

Press release No. 062 / 2009-02-25  According to provisional national account data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), net borrowing of general government amounted to EUR 3.3 billion in 2008. That amount is calculated as the difference between revenue (EUR 1,091.1 billion) and expenditure (EUR 1,094.4 billion) of general government. When broken down by the government levels, the deficit of the Federation was EUR 15.8 billion and that of the Länder EUR 3.6 billion. In contrast to that, the municipalities (EUR 8.4 billion) and social insurance (EUR 7.7 billion) recorded considerable surpluses in 2008. When put in relation to the gross domestic product at current prices (EUR 2,492.0 billion), a deficit ratio of general government of –0.1% is obtained for 2008.

That was the largest quarter-on-quarter decrease ever recorded in united Germany. Decreasing economic trends were observed already in the previous two quarters when the GDP was down by 0.5% each. Only in the first three months of 2008, the German economy grew (+1.5%).

1st half of 2008: Households put more money aside

Press release No. 400 / 2008-10-28  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the World Savings Day on 30 October, households in Germany saved more money in the first six months of the year. Compared with one year earlier, the savings ratio rose by 0.5 percentage points to a current seasonally adjusted 11.3% of the disposable income. Per inhabitant an average EUR 180 was put aside every month, which is about EUR 10 more than in the past year. The total amount saved in the first half of 2008 amounted to nearly EUR 89 billion. Only in the months to come will it be possible to assess the impact which the present turmoil in the financial markets and the increasing economic uncertainties will have on the savings behaviour.


Maastrichtdeficit ratio for 2007 amounting to 0.2%

Press release No. 394 / 2008-10-22  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), net lending/net borrowing of general government, which has to be calculated for purposes of the European Stability Pact, must be corrected for reference year 2007 with regard to the result published in August 2008. This is due to the implementation of a Eurostat decision stating that the actions taken by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (Development Loan Corporation) in 2007 in the context of the risk protection for the Deutsche Industriebank AG must be recorded in the general government accounts.


General government records surplus of EUR 6.7 billion for the first half of 2008

Press release No. 309 / 2008-08-26  According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), net lending of general government amounted to EUR 6.7 billion in the first six months of 2008. Thus the surplus of EUR 4.2 billion achieved in the first half of 2007 could even be surpassed. As in the year before, net lending/net borrowing was characterised by a continued positive trend of revenue in the first six months of 2008. However, with 3.0% the increase of revenue was only about half as high. With a plus of 2.5%, expenditure showed a noticeable development in the first half of 2008 after four years of very moderate increases.

Press release No. 154 / 2008-04-17  The German industry (manufacturing) has succeeded in largely maintaining its share in the gross domestic product of Germanyas a whole over the past 15 years. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the Hanovertrade fair taking place from 21 to 25 April 2008, the gross value added of that sector amounted to about EUR 508 billion at current prices in 2007, which was a share of 23.4% in the total of all economic sectors in Germany(1993: 23.6%). In 2007, about 7.5 million persons in employment worked in manufacturing, and the compensation of employees was some EUR 331 billion.


Consumption expenditure in 2007 strongly influenced by car purchases

Press release No. 106 / 2008-03-12  Households in Germany increased their consumption expenditure by 1.2% in 2007; in 2006 the growth rate was 2.3%. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) with a view to the World Consumer Day on 15 March, consumption expenditure without private car purchases in 2007 rose 1.8%, following a 2.1% increase in 2006. This shows that the fluctuations in car purchases have a considerable impact on the trend of consumption expenditure of households.

Press release No. 092 / 2008-03-05  As shown by first results of the Federal Statistical Office’s (Destatis) national accounts, the average gross earnings of all employees in Germanyrose 1.4% to EUR 27,083 in 2007.


Gross value added of ICT: Services clearly prevail

Press release No. 077 / 2008-02-27  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) before the CeBIT trade fair, the gross value added created through the production of goods and services of information and communication technology (ICT) in Germany in 2007 amounted to some EUR 92 billion. While the share of ICT in the value added of the overall economy had still been nearly 4.3% in 2000, it amounted to somewhat more than 4.2% in 2007. This is due to a decline in the value added of ICT goods, which could not be completely offset by the increased share of ICT services. The data are based on computations of national accounting.


General government surplus – 2007 Maastrichtratio slightly on the plus side

Press release No. 074 / 2008-02-26  According to updated results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), net lending of general government amounted to about EUR 0.2 billion in 2007. This amount has been calculated as the difference between revenue (EUR 1,064.0 billion) and expenditure (EUR 1,063.8 billion) of general government. Hence, the first estimate of 15 January 2008 has been confirmed. The data are based on the definitions of the European System of Accounts (ESA) 1995.

Germans saving more money for a rainy day

Press release No. 428 / 2007-10-29  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the World Savings Day on 30 October, the inhabitants of Germanyput aside a monthly average of EUR 170 during the first six months of this year. The overall amount saved totalled EUR 84 billion. When seasonally adjusted, the savings ratio – amount saved in relation to the disposable income – rose by 0.4 percentage points from the first six months of 2006 to 10.9% in the first six months of 2007. This means that the level of the mid-1990s has been reached again.


Labour productivity per person in employment increasing nearly 23% since 1991

Press release No. 394 / 2007-09-27  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, labour productivity per person in employment in Germany’s national economy and per person-in-employment hour increased by a total of 22.5% and of 32.4%, respectively, between 1991 and 2006. The more favourable trend in productivity per person-in-employment hour reflects a 7.5% reduction in the average number of hours worked by persons in employment.


Exports creating ever more jobs – even among service providers

Press release No. 378 / 2007-09-18  The expanding German foreign trade provided a major impetus to employment in the period from 1995 to 2006: 8.9 million persons in employment whose place of employment is in Germanydepended on exports in 2006. That was nearly 23% of all persons in employment. In 1995 just about 15% of the persons in employment worked for exports.
Today, about half of the persons in employment depending on exports produce goods, while the other half produce services, that is mainly transport, wholesale and other business services for the export business. Employment in the service branches strongly benefits from exports of goods, said the President of the Federal Statistical Office, Walter Radermacher, at a press conference held jointly with the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS) in Berlin.


86% of dwellings owned by private households

Press release No. 348 / 2007-09-03  About 86% of the dwellings in Germany were owned by private households in 2006. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office, the share of dwellings owned by private households thus rose by a good 3 percentage points since 1991. The share of dwellings owned by corporations, however, decreased to about 12%.


General government surplus amounting to EUR 1.2 billion in the first six months of 2007

Press release No. 331 / 2007-08-23  According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office, net lending of general government amounted to EUR 1.2 billion in the first half of 2007. In the same period of the previous year, the deficit resulting from the balance of government revenue and expenditure amounted to EUR 23.0 billion. With the exception of the second half of 2000 when high income was earned from auctioning UMTS licences, budget deficits had continuously been recorded since German unification. In the first half of 2007, the trend of net lending/net borrowing of general government was above all due to the development of revenue which increased 5.6% compared to the same period a year earlier. The fact, however, that expenditure was moderate (+0.7%) during the reference period contributed to the result, too.
