As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the consumer price index for Germany in February 2010 rose 0.6% on February 2009. In January 2010 the inflation rate was 0.8%. Hence the rate of price increase was down in February. Compared with January 2010, the consumer price index was up by 0.4%. The estimate for February 2010 was thus revised upwards from +0.4% to +0.6% (in January 2010 from +0.2% to +0.4%).

Price rises of an average 10.9% were recorded on the third quarter of 2009. Compared with the lowest level recorded in the second quarter of 2009, the index increased by not less than 16.6% and thus reached its highest level in 2009. However, the prices of freight transports were down by an average 17.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009 on the same quarter a year earlier. On an annual average, the price index for air freight transports declined 30.6% in 2009 compared with 2008.
CeBIT 2010: Prices of notebooks have dropped by more than half since 2005

2010-03-02As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the CeBIT trade fair in Hannover, the consumer prices of notebooks and desktop PCs have dropped by more than half in the past five years: The prices of notebooks declined by 61.3% and those of desktop PCs by 58.8% between 2005 and 2009. Similar trends were observed for import prices. In 2009, the import prices of notebooks were 67.4% below the level of 2005. Over the same period, the import prices of desktop PCs dropped as well (–62.6%).

That was the lowest year-on-year rate of price increase since German unification. A similarly low rate of inflation was observed in 1999 (+0.6%). In 2007 and 2008, the year-on-year inflation rate was above the threshold of two percent which is important for monetary policy (2007: +2.3%; 2008: +2.6%). Steep price falls were recorded for sea transport: The prices of services in sea and coastal water transport were markedly down by 27.5% compared with one year earlier.The index of producer prices for telecommunication was 5.7% below the level of the same quarter of the previous year. The prices of fixed-line and Internet services fell by an average 1.1%, those of mobile communications services even by 11.8%. Prices also declined in freight transport by road (–3.3%). In contrast to that, prices in rail freight transport were up 2.0% in the third quarter of 2009 as compared to a year earlier. The prices of postal and courier services decreased by 1.7%.
