This means that the pre-crisis level of the first half of 2008, when the volume carried in rail freight transport was 189.8 million tonnes, was almost reached again. In the course of the first half of 2011, however, the increase has slowed down: While the year-on-year growth in the first three months was 10.6%, the volume transported from April to June rose just 5.8%.

Balance of accidents in 1st half of 2011: Markedly more casualties, but fewer accidents

Despite a higher number of accidents, the number of people killed in road traffic was lower than ever in 60 years. In 2010,  3,648 people were killed on German roads, 12% less than a year earlier. Compared with 1970, which was the worst year ever in accident statistics with 21,332 people killed, that is a decrease to just about a sixth.

Moderate increase in number of air passengers in first quarter of 2011

Press release No. 249 / 2011-07-05  In the first three months of 2011, 20.3 million passengers departed from German airports. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was 0.7 million more than in the previous year (+3.6%). While increases were marked in January (+7.9%) and February (+6.6%), a 1.9% decrease was recorded for March. The main reason is probably the fact that the Easter holidays, when many people travel, had been in March in 2010, while this year Easter was in April.

More traffic accidents but fewer fatalities in April 2011

Press release No. 235 / 2011-06-21  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 338 people were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany in April 2011. Press release No. 207 / 2011-05-31  A total of 92.2 million tonnes of goods were transported on German railway lines in the first quarter of 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was an increase of 10.6% from the first quarter of 2010. It should be taken into account that the transport volume in the first quarter of 2009 was characterized by a plunge as a result of the economic crisis. Compared with the period January to March 2008 it went down by more than one fifth (–21.2%).

Number of persons killed in traffic accidents up 16% in the first quarter of 2011

Press release No. 199 / 2011-05-24  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 742 people were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany in the first three months of 2011. These were 104 persons or 16% more than in the period January to March 2010. The weather conditions until mid-March of this year, which differed from those of the previous year, were probably a reason for the strong increase. The number of people injured increased, too, though less markedly (+5.7% to 71,400).

Fewer accidents, more people killed in road traffic in February 2011

Press release No. 156 / 2011-04-21  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 201 people were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany in February 2011. That was 17 people or 9.2% more than in the same month of the previous year. The number of people injured also rose, that is, by 9.9% to 21,400. A total of 162,700 road traffic accidents occurred in February 2011, which was about 12% less than in February 2010. That decrease is entirely due to accidents involving material damage, which decreased by 14% to 146,200. The number of accidents involving personal injury, however, rose sharply by 11% to 16,500.

Maritime transport up by 5%, container transshipment up by more than 10% in 2010

Press release No. 148 / 2011-04-14  According to provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), freight transshipment in German sea ports rose by 5%, container transshipment by more than 10% in 2010. This increase, however, was not enough to offset the slump in maritime transport resulting from the global economic and financial crisis. Last year, 276 million tonnes of freight were transshipped in German sea ports. Although this was an increase of 13.1 million tonnes on 2009, it was 44.6 million tonnes below the level of freight transshipment in 2008.

Inland waterways transport increasing nearly 13% in 2010 – highest rise in container transport

Press release No. 147 / 2011-04-13  Goods transport on inland waterways in Germany recorded a 12.8% increase in 2010. As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on provisional data, the volume of goods carried increased by 26 million tonnes to 229.9 million tonnes compared with 2009. However, the strong rise was not yet sufficient to fully make up for the slump suffered due to the global economic and financial crisis. In 2008, the volume of goods transported on German inland waterways amounted to 245.7 million tonnes and thus was nearly 16 million tonnes above the 2010 level. However, container transport as part of inland waterways transport reached a record high. Combined transport recorded 2,186,000 TEU (= twenty-foot equivalent unit/standard container). Never before so many goods were shipped in inland waterways transport containers.

Hence a new record level was reached.

Rail Transport 2010: freight losses of 2009 partly compensated

Press release No. 081 / 2011-02-28  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in 2010 all German railway companies together transported 355.7 million tons of goods. After the plunge of –15.9% in 2009 the growth-rate of 14.0% in 2010 compared to 2009 marks the highest increase since the data about rail-freight have been collected, but the total transport did not reach the peak-level of 2008 (371,3 million tons).

Number of people killed in road traffic accidents lower than ever before in 2010

Press release No. 073 / 2011-02-23  In 2010, a total of 3,657 people were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany. As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on provisional results, that was a decline of 495 persons or 12% on 2009. Hence the positive trend observed in the past years became even stronger in 2010. The year saw the lowest number of people killed in road traffic accidents for 60 years. The number of people injured in such accidents, too, declined by 6.5% to about 371,700 compared to 2009. Despite the positive trend, however, it must not be forgotten that the average number of people killed per day totalled not less than 10 and that of people injured amounted to more than 1,000.

Concerning the air-freight statistics as well in terms of percentage growth rates as in absolute terms that increase marks the highest growth in the history of these statistics.

Number of air passengers in Germany up by 5.0% in 2010

Press release No. 056 / 2011-02-10  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 2009 plunge in the number of air passengers could be compensated in 2010: the number of passengers arriving on and departing from German airports amounted to 166.0 million (+5.0% compared with 2009). With that increase the level of 2008 (165.6 million) could be reached after a decrease of 4.5% in 2009.

In the corresponding period of 2009, the figure was 196.3 million tonnes. Despite the increase, however, the level recorded before the slump that occurred in 2009 as a result of the worldwide economic and financial crisis was not regained yet. Before the crisis – in the first three quarters of 2008 – sea freight transhipment in German ports had amounted to over 243 million tonnes, which was 17% more than in 2010.

Despite more accidents and persons injured less people killed in road traffic accidents in November 2010

Press release No. 025 / 2011-01-20  In November 2010, 351 people were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany. Press release No. 020 / 2011-01-18  Goods transport on inland waterways increased by more than 13% in the first nine months of 2010 compared with the same period of 2009. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis ) based on provisional results. Altogether, 171.3 million tonnes of goods were transported on German inland waterways by the end of the third quarter of 2010. This was an increase of nearly 20 million tonnes on a year earlier. The strong rise was however not yet sufficient to fully make up for the slump suffered in 2009 due to the global economic and financial crisis. Before the crisis, that is in the first three quarters of 2008, the volume of goods transported by inland waterway vessels amounted to nearly 187 million tonnes, which was about 16 million tonnes more than in the corresponding reference period of 2010.

This was a strong decrease of 13.6% to 2008. But the financial and economic crisis in 2009 had hardly any effect on the number of employees and the number of airplanes: The number of persons working in air transport (about 64,100) was 0.7% lower than in 2008. The number of airplanes increased by 0.2%.

2010: for the first time fewer than 4,000 persons killed in road traffic

Press release No. 463 / 2010-12-10  The number of persons killed in road traffic will be down to some 3,700 in 2010 – this is shown by estimates of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on key data available for the period from January to October 2010. Hence the total number of persons killed in road traffic will fall below another thousand threshold. In 2007, the number of persons killed had decreased to under 5,000 for the first time.

Inland water transport in 2009: Decrease of turnover: –24%

The enterprises engaged in inland water transport achieved in 2009 a turnover of Euro 1.3 billion (–24.1%).

175 years of railway: from 475,000 to 2.37 billion passengers

Press release No. 447 / 2010-12-03  2.37 billion times passengers went by rail in Germany in 2009, of which 2.24 billion times in short-distance transport (including S-Bahn trains) and 123 million times in long-distance transport. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the first railway journey in Germany 175 years ago, which was a major step into the industrial age.

Rail-Freight: +16.7% from January to September 2010

Press release No. 437 / 2010-11-29  A total of 264.2 million tonnes of goods were transported on German railway lines from January to September 2010. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was an increase of 16.7% from the corresponding period of 2009. It should be taken into account that the transport volume in the first three quarters of 2009 was characterized by a plunge as a result of the economic crisis: compared with the period from January to September 2008 it went down by fifth (–20.3%).

Number of persons killed in traffic accidents decreasing also in September 2010

Press release No. 426 / 2010-11-18  According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 372 people were killed in road traffic accidents in Germany in September 2010. That is a decrease by 88 people or 23% from August of the previous year. The number of people injured, too, decreased by 11% to 35,400. Altogether, about 189,200 road traffic accidents occurred in August 2010, which is 1.4% more than in August 2009. That increase is entirely due to accidents involving material damage, which were up 4.0% to 161,600. The number of accidents involving personal injury fell sharply by 11% to 27,600. A reason for that large decline of the number of people killed was probably the extremely bad weather last August. In bad weather conditions, people usually drive more defensively and less often and fewer “unprotected” road users (cyclists, pedestrians) participate in traffic.
