1.5% increase in meat production in 2011

Press release No. 051 / 2012-02-13  In 2011, a total of 8.2 million tonnes of meat were produced commercially in Germany. Meat production increased by 119,000 tonnes (+1.5%) on a year earlier, thus reaching a new record value. As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the growth in production was due to increases in pork and poultry production, while a decline was recorded in beef production.



About 27.4 million pigs are kept in Germany

Press release No. 012 / 2012-01-12  On reference day 3 November 2011, about 27.4 million pigs were kept in Germany according to provisional results. At the same time, there were also some 12.5 million cattle and 1.65 million sheep, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).


3% more winter grain sown for 2012 harvest

Press release No. 484 / 2011-12-22  Farmers in Germany sowed winter grain on 5.52 million hectares of arable land in autumn 2011. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the size of the area sown for the 2012 harvest was by some 172,000 hectares or a good 3% larger than in 2011. The largest increases in area were observed in Schleswig-Holstein (just under +12%) and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (just under +7%). Only in Rheinland-Pfalz the area decreased by just under 2%.


Utilised agricultural area in Germany is third largest in the EU – varied regional structure

Press release No. 422 / 2011-11-15  Together with France, Italy and Spain, Germany is among the four largest agricultural producers in the European Union (EU). For years already, those four countries together have contributed more than half of the total gross value added in European agriculture. In addition, with 16.7 million hectares, Germany had the third largest utilised agricultural area in the EU--European Union in 2010.


Number of pigs slaughtered in 3rd quarter of 2011 larger than ever

Press release No. 420 / 2011-11-14  In the third quarter of 2011, 15.2 million pigs were commercially slaughtered in Germany, that was 3.5% or 521,000 animals more than in the same quarter a year earlier. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this exceeded the previous record number of pig slaughterings of the fourth quarter of 2010 (just under 15.1 million pigs).



Sale of mineral fertilisers up 13.0%

Press release No. 392 / 2011-10-21  The sale of mineral fertilizers, either from domestic production or importation, rose 13.0% in financial year 2010/2011 (July 2010 to June 2011) compared with financial year 2009/2010. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 2.28 million tonnes of calcium fertilisers, 1.79 million tonnes of nitrogenous fertilisers, 0.43 million tonnes of potash fertilisers and 0.29 million tonnes of phosphate fertilisers were sold to agricultural sales organisations or final consumers in Germany in financial year 2010/2011.


Used agricultural area decreasing over time

Press release No. 383 / 2011-10-14  The used agricultural area in Germany has continued to decrease over the last few years. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the occasion of the World Food Day on 16 October 2011, the agricultural area used by holdings was just about 16.8 million hectares in 2011, which is 47% of the total area of Germany. In 1995 about 17.3 million hectares of agricultural area were used – this means that the area has decreased by a good 3% in the last 16 years.


Moderate increase in meat production in the first half of 2011

Press release No. 296 / 2011-08-15  In the first half of 2011, about 4 million tonnes of meat were produced commercially in Germany. That was an increase in production of 1.1% (+42,700 tonnes) on the same period a year earlier. As also reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the trend of continuous strong increases in meat production, which had been observed for several years (on average +4.0% since 2005), did not continue.


2011 harvest: large quantities of asparagus, but not of strawberries

Press release No. 275 / 2011-07-22  According to estimates of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 2011 asparagus harvest yielded an average 55 decitonnes per hectare (1 decitonne = 100 kilograms) in the whole of Germany, which was a very good result. The yield of asparagus was 11% above the average of the last six years.


Harvest of sweet cherries in 2011 expected to be better than in 2010, sour cherries stagnating

Press release No. 250 / 2011-07-06  According to first estimates of 10 June 2011, the harvest of sweet cherries is slightly up on the previous year and is expected to be a good 33,300 tonnes. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 8% increase on 2010 is contrasted by a nearly constant harvested quantity of sour cherries of just under 18,300 tonnes. Especially late frosts in May prevented a better harvest.


Slightly declining stock of pigs

Press release No. 248 / 2011-07-04  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), some 26.7 million pigs were kept in Germany on the reference day 3 May 2011. Thus the stock of pigs was slightly declining over the past six months (about –0.7%). These are the results of the representative survey of pig stocks in holdings with a minimum of 50 pigs or 10 breeding sows.


Meat production in 1st quarter of 2011 stagnating at high level

Press release No. 186 / 2011-05-12  In the first quarter of 2011, just under 2 million tonnes of meat were produced from commercial slaughtering in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the trend of continuous strong increases in meat production, which had been observed since 2005, did thus not continue. Factors contributing to this development were the small increases in slaughtering of pigs and poultry and the marked decrease in cattle slaughtering. Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, meat production rose just slightly by 0.4% or just under 8,000 tonnes.


Number of laying hens on the rise – caging reduced drastically

Press release No. 072 / 2011-02-22  On 1 December 2010, the number of animals kept by holdings with at least 3,000 places for hens was markedly higher again in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis ), the holdings kept 29.9 million laying hens, which is an increase by 11.2% compared with December 2009. Industrial hen house capacity amounted to 36.7 million hen keeping places. It fell by 1.7% against December 2009.


Record meat production in 2010

Press release No. 062 / 2011-02-15  Total commercial meat production in Germany reached a record value of 8.0 million tonnes in 2010. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that is an increase of 302,000 tonnes or 3.9% on the previous year. The growth in production was mainly due to the development of pork and poultry production; beef production contributed a smaller share.


A third of farmers achieving some turnover from non-agricultural activities

Press release No. 036 / 2011-01-27  Agricultural holdings contribute to maintaining the rural area not only through their traditional agricultural activities. In 2010, a third of all agricultural holdings achieved some turnover from other activities. The most frequent alternative sources of income are the production of renewable energies (42%), contract work, for example, for municipalities or other holdings (28%), and forestry (24%).


Autumn sowing for the 2011 harvest: winter wheat remaining the most important crop

Press release No. 484 / 2010-12-22  Winter wheat continues to be the most important crop cultivated on arable land in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), farmers sowed an area of 3.26 million hectares with winter wheat in autumn 2010 for the 2011 harvest. Thus the size of the area cultivated with winter wheat remains almost unchanged compared with the result of the preliminary main survey of land use of 2010. In long-term comparison, the cultivation of winter wheat was extended by some 413,000 hectares or 14% in all of Germany during the last 10 years.


Stock of pigs in Germany markedly up by 1.4%

Press release No. 481 / 2010-12-21  There are some 26.9 million pigs in Germany– this is a result of the livestock survey of 3 November 2010. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the stock of pigs thus rose by some 360,000 animals or 1.4% in the last 6 months. The number of young pigs rose especially markedly, that is, by 9.6% to 6.2 million animals.


Significant rise in pig meat production in the 3rd quarter of 2010

Press release No. 417 / 2010-11-16  In the 3rd quarter of 2010, just under 2 million tonnes of meat were produced from commercial slaughtering in Germany, 4.2% more than in the same quarter a year earlier. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this rise was mainly due to the significant increase in the number of pigs slaughtered. The production of poultry meat is also on the rise, while the production of beef is declining.


Sales of fertilizers increased

Press release No. 379 / 2010-10-21  As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in the financial year 2009/2010, 1.57 million tonnes of nitrogenous fertilizers, 0.24 million tonnes of phosphate fertilizers, 0.36 million tonnes of potash fertilizers and 2.07 million tonnes calcium fertilizers produced domestically or imported were sold to agricultural sales organisations or end users in Germany. Compared with 2008/2009, 1.2% more nitrogenous fertilizers, 34.9% more phosphate fertilizers and 102.5% more potash fertilizers were sold. Sales of calcium fertilizers decreased by 7.2%.


1st half of 2010: meat production up by 4.1%

Press release No. 282 / 2010-08-12  In the first half of 2010, well above 3.9 million tonnes of meat were produced commercially in Germany; that was 4.1% or 153,900 tonnes more than in the first half of 2009. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reported that pork accounted for the largest share in meat production with just under 2.7 million tonnes, followed by poultry meat (679,800 tonnes) and beef (566,200 tonnes).
