Differences between the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices and the Consumer Price Index for Germany
Both the Consumer Price Index and the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices for Germany were substantially revised at the beginning of this year. In the context of this revision, updated weighting patterns were introduced and methodological improvements incorporated. Although the individual measures were almost the same for both indices, the effects on their results have differed due to differences in racticalimplementation. This paper outlines the differences between the above price indices and quantifies the effects caused by them. Furthermore, it facilitates an interpretation of the current results of the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices.
