Das gesamtwirtschaftliche Materialkonto dient dazu, die Materialflüsse zwischen Umwelt, inländischer und ausländischer Wirtschaft in physischen Einheiten (Tonnen) abzubilden und zu bilanzieren. Neben der direkten inländischen Entnahme von Rohstoffen aus der Umwelt durch menschliche Aktivitäten, werden auch Rest- und Schadstoffe erfasst, die durch Verarbeitung und Nutzung dieser Materialien entstehen und wieder an die Umwelt abgegeben werden.
Im Rahmen eines von der EU-kofinanzierten Projektes wurde die Berichterstattung des Materialkontos um die Emissionen ins Wasser erweitert. Im Detail wurden dabei die jährlichen Schadstofffrachten von Stickstoff, Phosphor, Schwermetallen, sonstigen (organischen) Substanzen sowie Verklappungen berechnet. Bestandteil der Berechnung sind alle Emissionen ins Wasser durch Aktivitäten der Wirtschaft und der privaten Haushalte, wobei sowohl behandelte als auch unbehandelte Abwässer berücksichtigt werden.
Der vorliegende englischsprachige Projektbericht bietet detaillierte Erläuterungen zu den verwendeten Quellen sowie Berechnungsmethoden, inklusive Ergebnissen für die Jahre 2001 bis 2021.

The aim of the 'economy-wide material flow accounts' is to record and account for material flows between the environment and the domestic and foreign economies, measured in physical units (tonnes). Apart from the direct domestic extraction of raw materials from the environment by human activities, the accounts also cover residue materials and pollutants that are generated through processing and using raw materials and then are emitted to the environment.
As part of an EU co-funded project, the information reported by material flow accounts was extended to include emissions to water. In detail, the annual pollutant loads of nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals and other (organic) substances were calculated as well as the dumping of materials at sea. The calculation includes all emissions to water by economic activities and private households, taking into account both treated and non-treated waste water.
This English-language project report provides detailed explanations of the data sources and the calculation methods, including results for the years 2001 to 2021.
