President from 2008 to 2015

On 1 August 2008 Roderich Egeler was appointed President of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) and Federal Returning Officer.

Roderich Egeler was born in Obernkirchen (Niedersachsen) in 1950. After his economics studies in Bonn and Cologne he joined the Federal Civil Defence Agency in 1978. There Roderich Egeler worked as Assistant Head of Section, Head of Section and Head of Division. In the disaster control department, the focus of his work was on the equipment and training of the units of extended disaster control and the organisation of repair activities. Also, he was Head of the Budget Section of the Federal Civil Defence Agency for several years and was Commissioner for the Budget of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief.

In 1991 Roderich Egeler joined the Budget Division of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

In 1993 he became Head of the Procurement Office of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The Procurement Office is a modern service provider regarding purchases for the authorities and institutions within the Ministry’s area of competence and now also for many other organisations of the Federation. During his term, the purchasing processes were changed over to electronic web-based purchasing systems and procedures.

In the "super election year" of 2009 Roderich Egeler had the task of conducting the election of the Members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany and the election to the 17th German Bundestag. Other major focuses of the President’s work are the preparation of the register-based 2011 Census, administrative cost measurement, as well as the reform of business statistics and the further development of foreign trade statistics.
