Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat)

Portrait of the organization

Eurostat is the Statistical Office of the EU. It was founded in 1953 as the Statistical Department of the European Community for Coal and Steel. Since 1959 it operates under the name Eurostat. Its headquarters are situated in Luxembourg.

The task of Eurostat is to provide institutions of the EU and the European public with high-quality statistical information. The data used by Eurostat is predominantly compiled by the national statistical offices of the EU. Eurostat harmonizes the data in order to enable cross country comparisons within the EU. A network of service points all over Europe offers advice on official EU statistics to all citizens, institutions and enterprises. This network is known as the European Statistical Data Support (ESDS) network.

Statistical themes

Eurostat offers official harmonized statistics about the European Union. These are all divided into the following nine themes:

  • Agriculture and fishing
  • External trade
  • Transport
  • Environment and energy
  • Science and technology
