International statistics

United Nations (UN)

Portrait of the organization

The United Nations (UN) were founded in 1945. Their headquarters are situated in New York. The organisation is an interstate alliance of 193 states. The main aims include assuring world peace, monitoring compliance with international law, protecting human rights and promoting closer intergovernmental cooperation.

The UN consists of numerous bodies, committees, specialised agencies and programmes, which have specific tasks and correspondingly provide specific statistics. As a parent organisation, the statistics department of the United Nations is responsible for the online statistics portal UNdata. This portal provides common access to numerous databases of UN programmes and specialized agencies (e.g. WHO, UNWTO or UNHCR).

For foreign trade data, the UN provides the database Comtrade. This offers statistics on the worldwide import and export of goods at a detailed level and also data on international trade in services.

The database Gender info provides comprehensive gender statistics.

A further online database that covers a range of statistical topics is the web portal Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (MBS). This offers monthly, quarterly and annual data.
