United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Portrait of the organization

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was founded in 1951. The organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and again in 1981. The headquarters of the organization are situated in Geneva.

The UNHCR's main responsibility is to protect and support refugees. The organization seeks to ensure the rights of refugees are respected and accepted by all countries. The legal basis for their work is the Geneva Convention on Refugees, which was first signed in 1951 and amended by an additional Protocol in 1967. The Geneva Convention states that refugees are not be expelled, if they are in danger of prosecution in their country of origin. The UNHCR also helps to provide accomodation and health care for refugees and helps people that return home to restart their lives.
