World Trade Organization (WTO)

Portrait of the organization

The World Trade Organization was founded in 1995 and is the successor organization of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The WTO has 159 member states and its headquarters are situated in Geneva.

The organization aims to reduce trade barriers with the long-term objective of an alomst completely free trade. The WTO initiates international negotiations to reduce trade barriers and monitors the trade policy of its member states. The organization also functions as a mediator when interstate trade disputes arise. The WTO also offers consultation and technical support on trade policy to developing countries.
