World Bank

Portrait of the organization

The World Bank is a specialized agency of the UN. Its main objective is to reduce worldwide poverty by supporting sustainable economic growth in poorer countries.

The World Bank Group refers to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development which was founded in the year 1944. The group consists of five organisations which all operate independently and which are all regulated by their respective member states:

  • IBRD (187 member states)
  • IDA (170 member states)
  • IFC (182 member states)
  • MIGA (175 member states)
  • ICSID (147 member states)

The term "World Bank" normally relates to the first two organisations, whhilst the term "World Bank Group" includes all five organisations.

The World Bank is committed to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

As a result of the World Bank’s Open Data Initiative the range of freely accessible data series was widened considerably. In the World Developement Indicator Database for instance the number of indicators available at no charge was increased from about 50 to over 1,000. An overview on all free databases is found on the World Banks´ data catalog..
