United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Portrait of the organization

The UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It was founded in 1945 and consists of 193 member states. The organization is based in Paris.

Its stated purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science and culture. The UNESCO plays an important role on realising the following United Nations-Millennium Development Goals:

  • Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
  • Securing universal primary education
  • Promoting gender equality and empowering women
  • Reducing child mortality
  • Improving maternal health
  • Combatting HIV / AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  • Ensuring environmental sustainability
  • Developing a global partnership for development
