Universal Postal Union (UPU)

Portrait of the organization

The Universal Postal Union was founded in 1874 and became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1948. It has more than 190 member states and is based in Berne, Switzerland.

The UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal-sector players and helps to ensure a universal network of up-to-date products and services. It fulfils an advisory and mediating role and offers member states technical assistance where required. It sets the rules for international mail exchange and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in the postal sector and to improve the quality of the postal service.
