The extent of internet use varies between different parts of the world. In 2016 roughly 79% of the population in Europe made use of the World Wide Web, while the relevant proportion was only 25% in Africa south of the Sahara. An average of 47% of the global population were internet users. In its new brochure "G20 in figures", the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) picks up on these estimates of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
