Number of organic farms up 30% in the last ten years
In 2013, there were a total of roughly 285,000 agricultural holdings in Germany. 18,000 of them (6%) produced their products in accordance with the EU provisions on organic farming. The number of organic farms in Germany has markedly increased in the last few years. It was up 30% between 2003 and 2013. The agricultural area used by organic farms has grown, too. While it comprised roughly 731,000 hectares in 2003, the figure was just over a million hectares in 2013 (+43%).
The total number of agricultural holdings fell by 32% in the same period. The utilised agricultural area of all holdings, however, did not change much (-2%).
