With a 54% proportion of the total area under grain cultivation, winter wheat again clearly tops the list of grain cultivated in 2017.

In autumn 2016, farmers in Germany sowed winter grain on 5.34 million hectares of land for the next harvest of 2017. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the area cultivated with winter grain for the 2017 harvest has remained almost unchanged compared with the relevant area in 2016 (–0.8%).

The estimated harvest amounts of permanent pasture together (pastures and meadows) have increased compared to the year 2015. In 2016 30.8 million tons of dry matter were estimated, in 2015 there were 28.3 million tons (+ 8.9 %).

In 2016, about 4.7 million hectares are used as permanent grassland in Germany. This means that the share of grassland in the utilised agricultural area amounts to almost 28 %.
