Cultivated blueberriesin 2016: larger area under cultivation, smaller quantity harvested

As in the previous years, more blueberries were cultivated in Germany in 2016. Compared with 2015, the outdoor area on which blueberries were cultivated increased by slightly more than 9% to 2,710 hectares. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was roughly one third of the total outdoor area under cultivation with bush berries in Germany.

Due to sunshine and spring temperatures, the 2017 asparagus season in many regions of Germany started earlier than in the previous year. Despite the later cold spell, the asparagus harvest will be good. Based on a first estimate of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the asparagus harvest is expected to yield approximately 127,800 tonnes in the whole of Germany.

Cultivated areas up 7% for apples in 2017 from 2012

Apples are the most important tree fruit in Germany. They have been grown on approximately 34,000 hectares in 2017. That is a 7% increase from 2012 (31,700 hectares). Based on the results of the 2017 orchard survey, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the total area covered by fruit trees in Germany totals almost 50,000 hectares. Compared with 2012, it increased by a good 4,300 hectares.

10% of area under vegetable cultivation farmed organically in 2016

In 2016, the organically farmed area represented 10% of the total area of vegetables grown outdoors in Germany. 12,400 hectares were farmed organically, which was an increase of 15% on 2015. The harvested quantities of organic outdoor vegetables rose by 18% to just under 284,000 tonnes in the same period.

Cultivation of ornamental plants in 2017: markedly fewer holdings than five years earlier

In 2017, flowers and ornamental plants were cultivated on a basic area of 6,600 hectares by just under 3,700 holdings specialising in such products. The number of producers fell considerably by 18% compared with the survey of ornamental plants conducted in 2012, while the basic area used for cultivation was reduced only slightly by 2%.

Tree nurseries in 2017: marked decline in both holdings and areas

In 2017, just over 1,700 agricultural holdings have cultivated tree nursery areas of 18,600 hectares in Germany. Compared with the latest 2012 survey, the overall area cultivated has decreased by 14% and the number of tree nurseries by 24%.

Horticulture

Horticulture 2016: markedly fewer holdings, larger utilised area

In 2016, 27,200 holdings cultivated well above 229,000 hectares of horticultural land in Germany. Based on the results of the 2016 census of horticulture, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of holdings growing horticultural products fell by almost one quarter (-24%) from 35,700 to 27,200 compared with the 2010 census of agriculture.
