2018 harvest: year-on-year increase of 6% in strawberry yields expected

There will be higher strawberry yields in 2018 as weather conditions have been more favourable than in the previous year. According to a first provisional estimate of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the outdoor strawberry harvest is expected to yield approximately 122,300 tonnes in all of Germany, which would be 6% more than in 2017.

Very high cherry yield expected for 2018

Due to the warm and dry spring, German farmers producing fruit for the market expect a very high cherry yield in 2018, that is, 61,100 tonnes. Based on a first estimate of 10 June 2018 the yield of sweet cherries (roughly 44,300 tonnes) and the yield of sour cherries (just under 16,800 tonnes) will be more than twice that of 2017, which produced a very low yield due to the weather conditions.

Bush berries: area under cultivation and quantity harvested increased again in 2017

In 2017, approximately 40,100 tonnes of bush berries were harvested in Germany, the area under cultivation was 8,900 hectares. The area under cultivation thus increased by 5% on the previous year, the quantity harvested by 11%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the area under bush berry cultivation has continuously been extended over the last five years.

and fruit area

11 % of area under vegetable cultivation farmed organically in 2017

In 2017, the organically farmed area represented 11 % of the total area of vegetables grown outdoors in Germany. 13,700 hectares were farmed organically, which was an increase of 11 % on 2016. The harvested quantities of organic outdoor vegetables rose by 12 % to just under 319,100 tons in the same period.

ornamental plants

Cultivation of ornamental plants in 2017: markedly fewer holdings than five years earlier

In 2017, flowers and ornamental plants were cultivated on a basic area of 6,600 hectares by just under 3,700 holdings specialising in such products. The number of producers fell considerably by 18% compared with the survey of ornamental plants conducted in 2012, while the basic area used for cultivation was reduced only slightly by 2%.

Tree nurseries in 2017: marked decline in both holdings and areas

In 2017, just over 1,700 agricultural holdings have cultivated tree nursery areas of 18,600 hectares in Germany. Compared with the latest 2012 survey, the overall area cultivated has decreased by 14% and the number of tree nurseries by 24%.

Horticulture

Horticulture 2016: markedly fewer holdings, larger utilised area

In 2016, 27,200 holdings cultivated well above 229,000 hectares of horticultural land in Germany. Based on the results of the 2016 census of horticulture, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of holdings growing horticultural products fell by almost one quarter (-24%) from 35,700 to 27,200 compared with the 2010 census of agriculture.
