7.5 million hectoliters of wine must German winemakers harvested in 2017. The entire wine must harvest fell by 1.6 million hectoliters (-17.2 %) in contrast to the previous year. Compared to the six-year average 2011 to 2016 (8.9 million hectoliters) the harvest was nearly 1.4 million hectoliters lower, or 15.7 %.

German winegrowers extend the cultivation of Riesling also 2017. Riesling, the most important variety in Germany, reached a record high in 2017, the relevant area under vines being 23,809 hectares. This was an increase of 109 hectares on 2016.
