As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, the construction of a total of 169,500 dwellings was permitted in Germany from January - June 2017. Compared with the corresponding period of 2016 this is a decrease of 7.3 % or 13,400 dwellings.

Heating systems which use renewable energies were installed in 60.3% of the just under 110,000 residential buildings completed in 2016. 37.6% of the residential buildings completed were primarily heated by energy from renewable sources.

At the end of 2016, the number of dwellings in residential and non-residential buildings amounted to roughly 41.7 million in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the stock of dwellings excluding those in residential establishments, which have only been covered since 2011, was roughly 41.2 million.

Based on the final results of the 2011 census of buildings and housing, the dwelling stock in 2016 was structured as follows: most of the dwellings in Germany (25%) consisted of 4 rooms. The percentage share of dwellings with 3 rooms was just under 22%, that of dwellings with 5 rooms was 17%.

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that price-adjusted new orders in the main construction industry in June 2017 increased a seasonally and working-day adjusted 3.9% on May 2017.
