17 May 2023 Turnover in accommodation and food services in March 2023 down 2.1% on the previous month

In March 2023, the calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation and food services decreased by a real (price adjusted) 2.1% and a nominal (not price adjusted) 1.0% compared with February 2023. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the turnover in accommodation and food services in March 2023 (in real terms and after adjustment for calendar and seasonal fluctuations) was 9.0% higher than in March 2022. It was, however, 14.0% below the level of March 2019, the corresponding month before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany.

Publication of monthly statistics in the trade and service sectors recommences

On 8 October 2024, the Federal Statistical Office has resumed its regular publication of short-term statistics for trade and services with a release of calendar and seasonally adjusted results of wholesale trade turnover in the reference month of July 2024 and on October 10 with a release of calendar and seasonally adjusted results of retail trade turnover in the reference month of August 2024.

Monthly statistics of accommodation and food service activities 2020

The monthly survey of accommodation and food services are part of the EU system of short-term statistics designed for purposes of monetary and economic policies. Furthermore they supply information on the use of various components of the individual consumption expenditure. Also, the monthly surveys of accommodation and food service activities represent an important supplement to the annual statistic of accommodation and food services that provide information on the structure of enterprises, cost-effectiveness and productivity in the area of accommodation and food services. To distinguish the monthly survey of accommodation and food services from the annual structural survey, the former are also referred to as short-term surveys.

Annual survey of accommodation and food service activities 2020

The results of the annual survey supply information on the structure of enterprises that is essential for economic policy purposes, and they also make it possible to assess cost-effectiveness and productivity of accommodation and food service activities. The annual survey of accommodation and food services is important in that it supplements the results of the monthly statistics of accommodation and food services. It is also called structural survey to distinguish it from the monthly short-term survey.

Experimental statistics

In the "EXSTAT – Experimental statistics section" we regularly publish new and innovative project results of the Federal Statistical Office. These are obtained by using new data sources and methods. Both the degree of maturity and quality of the results differ from those of official statistics, especially regarding harmonisation, coverage and methodology. Nonetheless these results of the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder offer new and interesting ways of looking at various statistical topics.
