In 2015 the local units of mining and manufacturing produced 50 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity. The reports that this is a share of 10.4% of the gross electricity production in Germany, including the public power plants, as recorded by the official statistics agencies. The share of industrial electricity in the gross electricity production reported is by 1.8 percentage points higher than in 2005. In the first place, the industrial power plants meet internal demand, but in many instances electricity is supplied to other local units or exported to the public electricity grid.
