New Orders

Manufacturing in July 2018: New orders -0.9% seasonally adjusted on the previous month

Based on provisional data, price-adjusted new orders in manufacturing had decreased in July 2018 a seasonally and calendar adjusted 0.9% on the previous month. For June 2018, revision of the preliminary outcome resulted in a decrease of 3.9% compared with May 2018 (primary -4.0%).

Production index

Production in July 2018: -1.1% seasonally adjusted on the previous month

In July 2018, production in industry was down by 1.1% from the previous month on a price, seasonally and calendar adjusted basis according to provisional data. In June 2018, the revised figure shows an decrease of 0.7% (primary -0.9%) from May 2018.

Turnover

Manufacturing in July 2018: Turnover -1.8% seasonally adjusted on the previous month

The price-adjusted turnover in manufacturing in July 2018 was down a seasonally and calendar adjusted 1.8% on the previous month. In June 2018, the corrected figure shows a decrease of 0.7% to May 2018 (primary -1.0%).

Stock of Orders

Manufacturing in July 2018: unfilled orders up a seasonally adjusted 0.3% on the previous month

Based on provisional data, the price adjusted stock of orders in manufacturing in July 2018 rose a seasonally and calendar adjusted 0.3% on the previous month. The domestic orders not yet completed increased 0.5% on the previous month, the stock of foreign orders rose 0.2%. The stock of orders comprises the total of new orders received by the end of the reference month which have not led to any turnover and have not been cancelled by that time.

Employees

Number of employees in manufacturing in July 2018: +2.7% year on year

At the end of July 2018, 5.6 million people worked in local units of manufacturing with 50 or more persons employed in Germany. On the basis of provisional results, that was a rise by about 150,000 persons or 2.7% against July 2017.

Investments

Investments in industry up 3.9% in 2016 year on year

German industrial enterprises with 20 or more persons employed invested 62.1 billion euros in tangible fixed assets in 2016. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of roughly 2.4 billion euros or 3.9% compared with 2015.

Changeover in seasonal adjustment to X13 JDemetra+

Starting in 2018, short-term statistics in industry have been seasonally adjusted using the method X13 in JDemetra+.

The software JDemetra+ is recommended for seasonal adjustment of official statistics within the EU. The mathematical-statistical method X13 does not entail a fundamental change from the method so far applied (X-12-ARIMA).
