Services

The economic development in Germany over the last few decades has been characterised by far-reaching structural change, which is reflected especially by considerable employment growth in the service sector. In contrast, traditional areas such as agriculture, forestry and industry have lost some of their economic significance.

Short-term economic statistics for 2013: more persons employed in the service sector

Short-term economic statistics cover, among other things, the service branches of transportation and storage, information and communication, and professional and technical activities. Compared with the previous year, the number of persons employed rose in all three sectors in 2013. The largest increase was observed for professional and technical activities (+2.9%) and for information and communication (+2.8%). However, the growth in jobs was slightly smaller than in the previous years.

While employment was up in 2013 in all three service branches, turnover increased only for professional and technical activities (+2.0%). In transportation and storage, turnover stagnated and in communication a 0.4% decrease in turnover was observed on the previous year. Following strong increases in turnover in 2011, the positive development had markedly slowed down in 2012 already.

Structural survey

7.7 million jobs in selected service branches in 2009

In 2009, about 815,550 enterprises and organisations in selected service branches employed a total of almost 7.7 million people. They achieved a turnover of Euro 903.1 billion.

The selected service branches include the very heterogeneous branches of transportation and storage, information and communication, real estate activities, professional, scientific and technical activities as well as administrative and support service activities and repair of computers and personal and household goods.

What is interesting here is the structure of the enterprises and organisations in those service branches. Only a good quarter of the enterprises and organisations (27.1 %) had an annual turnover of Euro 250,000 or over in 2009. However, those units accounted for a total of 94.4 % of the turnover achieved in those economic branches and for 84.3 % of all persons employed there.
