Freight transhipment in maritime transport increased slightly in 2016



In 2016, the volume of seaborne goods loaded and unloaded increased by 0.1% compared with a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that a total of 296.5 million tonnes of goods were handled in German sea ports that year. In 2015, the relevant volume of freight was 296.2 million tonnes.

Volume of goods transported on inland waterways stagnated in 2016



In the first half of 2016, the volume of goods transported on inland waterways decreased by 2.4% compared with the same period a year earlier. 113.6 million tonnes of goods were transported on German inland waterways. This was a decrease of 2.8 million tonnes from the same period of 2015.

Rail freight transport down by 1% to 364 million tonnes in 2016



In 2016, 364 million tonnes of goods were transported on the public rail network in Germany. Compared with the previous year, this was a decrease of 1.0% in the quantity of goods carried. Compared with 2011, it was down by as much as 3.0%. The just under 375 million tonnes of goods transported by rail in 2011 were the highest total in the last ten years.
