Bayern continues to be the most popular destination for domestic visitors

Holiday and business trips become increasingly important in Germany. Just under 141 million overnight visitors whose usual residence was in Germany were registered in 2017, up from roughly 124 million five years ago. The average length of stay remained broadly constant, with a slight fall from 2.8 to 2.7 nights.

In 2017, Bayern was again the most popular Land of destination among German guests: nearly 20% of the domestic visitors stayed there. Nordrhein-Westfalen and Baden-Württemberg followed at some distance, with 13% and 12% respectively.

Visitors from abroad also stayed mainly in Bavarian accommodation establishments, accounting for 25% of all arrivals. The second place in this category was shared by Nordrhein-Westfalen, Berlin and Baden-Württemberg, each with around 14%.
