In brief
Bureaucracy cost index
It is a declared political goal to keep bureaucracy costs in Germany at a low level in the long term. With the "Better Regulation" work programme adopted by the Federal Government on 28 March 2012, the bureaucracy cost index was introduced. It indicates how the bureaucracy costs incurred by businesses change over time. Updates are published quarterly.
Barometer of burdens
The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder consider it one of their priority tasks to keep the burden placed on businesses by statistical reporting obligations as low as possible. The administrative efforts to be made by enterprises for official statistics are shown separately by the barometer of burdens. Therefore, the barometer of burdens, which is updated once a year, is an objective and quantifiable basis for a reasonable assessment of the burden placed on enterprises by official statistics.
Compliance costs
According to section 7 of the Act on the Establishment of the National Regulatory Control Council, the Federal Government reports about the year-on-year development of the compliance costs. In this context, the Federal Statistical Office has been commissioned to calculate the change in the compliance costs for every year. The results are published in the annual report of the Federal Government and on these web pages.
