Quality of employment

Employment plays a major role in most people's lives not only to secure their livelihood. The place of employment is where they spend many hours a day – often more time than is available for their families, friends and leisure activities. Therefore, for many people a "good job" is a major requirement for satisfaction and quality of life. Furthermore, efficient and innovative companies need motivated and satisfied employees.

Seven dimensions are distinguished to represent the qualitative aspects of employment:

• Safety at work and gender equality
• Income and indirect benefits from employment
• Working hours and work-life balance
• Security of employment and social protection
• Social dialogue
• Skills and training
• Workplace relationships and work motivation

Within those dimensions, the qualitative aspects of employment are represented by some 50 selected indicators. Here, you find background information on the calculation and data sources used for the indicators.

The federal government's report on poverty and wealth

The report on poverty and wealth is based on the guiding idea that a detailed analysis of a country’s social situation provides the necessary basis for a policy aimed at strengthening social justice and improving social integration.

The report entitled "Lebenslagen in Deutschland - Der 4. Armuts- und Reichtumsbericht der Bundesregierung" (Lives' situations in Germany – the German Federal Government's 4rd Report on Poverty and Wealth) analyses the social trends in Germany since 2007 and, where the required data are available, allows for a comparison of the development over the period of ten years.

Report "Education in Germany 2014"

The fifth Report "Education in Germany 2014" again presents a comprehensive empirical account of the entire structure of the German educational system, from early childhood education and care to the different types of continuing education of adults. Based on indicators, the report informs about the present conditions in the German education system, its performance and its problematic features. In an in-depth analysis the report provides information on lifelong cultural education.

The report was commissioned by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It was written by the Authoring Group Educational Reporting including the Federal Statistical Office and Länder Statistical Offices. The work was led by the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF).

International indicators of education – a comparison between the German Länder

Recently, the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder issued the latest version of their joint publication "International Indicators of Education – a Comparison between the German Länder" which contains selected OECD indicators for Germany in a breakdown by Länder. The indicators refer to the following thematic fields:

• The output of educational institutions and the impact of learning
• Financial and human resources invested in education
• Access to education, participation and progression
• The learning environment and organisation of schools

This publication is designed to supplement the OECD publication "Education at a Glance".

Health monitoring system

The Health monitoring system (GBE) of the Federation gives information on the health status of and the health services provided to the population in Germany. It is based on data and indicator assisted descriptions and analyses. The thematic fields of federal health monitoring cover all areas of the healthcare system, namely its framework conditions, the health status, behavioural aspects of health, diseases, health services, health expenditure, and the costs and financing of the healthcare system.

Science and technology indicators for Germany and the Länder

Progress in the field of science and technology has to be measured and analysed to enable a reliable assessment of the current situation. The basis of such measurements and analyses are well-established indicators describing the scientific and technological development. A selection of indicators in this field was compiled from various data sources. In addition to figures from official statistics, data from the science statistics of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (the business community’s innovation agency for the German science system) and the German Patent and Trade Mark Office were drawn upon.

Eurostat Sustainable Development Indicators

An integral part of the European Communities' Sustainable Development Strategy is the monitoring of a large number of indicators to measure progress in relation to each specific challenge of sustainable development. In 2005, the Commission adopted a first set of indicators, which was extended in 2007 to adjust it to the renewed strategy. Apart from socio-economic development, the Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) measure demographic changes, climate change, natural resources and others.
