Environmental surveys

Environmental surveys deal with such environmental burdens as waste and both air and water pollution. Environmental statistics reflect, for instance, the extent to which water resources are used or waste is produced and recovered. In addition, the environmental protection costs incurred by enterprises and local units are determined. Furthermore, information is collected on environmental investments, for instance, aimed at protecting the climate or using renewable energy sources.

Households’ use of environmental resources

Depending on the resource, households’ share in the direct use of environmental resources in Germany differs considerably in 2010. Their percentage share is relatively high for built-up area (52.6%) and amounts to 82.6% for driving activities (passenger-kilometres (passenger cars)). The share of households is also relatively high – about one fourth – when it comes to the final consumption of energy (including the consumption of motor fuels) (26.9%), water (not including cooling water) (18.4%), emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2, 24.1%), nitrogen oxides (NOx, 19.7%) and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs, 32.5%), while it is markedly lower for other air emissions. Households account for 13.4% of the total waste generated.
