German exports in August 2017: +7.2% on August 2016

Germany exported goods to the value of 103.1 billion euros and imported goods to the value of 83.0 billion euros in August 2017. Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that German exports increased by 7.2% and imports by 8.5% in August 2017 year on year. Compared with July 2017, exports increased by 3.1% and imports by 1.2% in calendar and seasonally adjusted terms.

German exports up 1.1% in 2016

Germany exported goods to the value of 1,206.9 billion euros and imported goods to the value of 954.8 billion euros in 2016. Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that German exports increased by 1,1% and imports by 0,6% in 2016 compared with 2015.

59% of German exports to third countries invoiced in euros

In 2016, the euro continued to be the currency most frequently used for German exports to countries outside the European Union (third countries). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, in terms of value, 59.4% of Germany's exports to third countries were invoiced in euros.

12% of German EU exports went to the United Kingdom in 2016

The United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (EU) will be a topic for discussion on Europe Day celebrated on 9 May. The United Kingdom is the second important sales market for German exporters among the EU Member States.

Germany’s most important trading partners 2016

In 2016 the top country of destination for German exports was the United States followed by France and the United Kingdom. Germany exported goods worth 106.9 billion euro to the United States, 101.4 billion euro to France and 86.1 billion euro to the United Kingdom.

Trading goods

Food exports amounted to 69.9 billion euros in 2016

Germany exported food and semi-luxury food to the value of 69.9 billion euros and imported such goods to the value of 81.2 billion euros in 2016. To coincide with the World Food Day on 16 October, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the exports of the food industry accounted for 5.8% of the total German exports and imports for 8.5% of the German imports.

The main German export product: motor vehicles

Accounting for 18.9% motor vehicles and parts thereof of exports, was Germany's main export product in 2016. Machinery (14.1%) and chemical products (8.9%) ranked second and third, respectively, among the most important export items.
