In brief

International comparison of prices

Spatial price comparisons are used to identify structural differences between places and/or regions. In the German statistical system, such comparisons currently are made only for the international level.

Price developments over time, however, are a focus of short-term economic monitoring.

Place-to-place index numbers

The Federal Statistical Office calculates place-to-place index numbers for purposes of determining the remuneration of public officials and soldiers sent abroad. They indicate by how much the cost of living at a foreign duty station differs from the cost of living in Berlin.

The monthly place-to-place index numbers are published for all duty stations of German missions abroad.

Purchasing power parities

The purchasing power parities calculated by Eurostat are based on prices collected by the national statistical offices. They allow spatial comparisons between prices paid in different countries for an internationally coordinated basket of goods.

Information and results for the European level are available from Eurostat, for the level of the Member States from the OECD.

The calculation of parities of consumer prices was discontinued with the end of reference year 2009.

Holidays in Europe: Low prices in the south and east, high prices in the north and west

New Year celebrations are over and people are starting to plan their holidays for 2018. Which European destinations have affordable prices from a German perspective?

The cost of living is lower in Southern and East European countries than in Germany. Bulgaria was the least expensive destination in the EU for holiday-makers. The price level of overnight stays in hotels and eating out in restaurants in Bulgaria was 59.8% below the level in Germany. Prices were also low in Croatia (- 35.8%).
