Higher education expenditure up to 52 billion euros in 2016

In 2016, public, church and private institutions of higher education in Germany spent 52.1 billion euros on teaching, research and health treatment. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 4% compared with 2015 (50.0 billion euros).

282 billion euros for education, science and research in 2016

According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 281.7 billion euros were spent on education, science and research in Germany in 2016. That was an increase of 7.6 billion euros, or 2.8%, compared with a year earlier. Factors contributing to this development included especially the increasing expenditure both on public and private educational institutions and on research and development. As in 2015, 9.0% were spent on education, science and research in 2016 when measured as a percentage of the gross domestic product.

BAföG statistics 2016: 823,000 recipients of training assistance in Germany

In 2016, 823,000 people received training assistance under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of BAföG recipients was down by approximately 47,000 or 5.5% compared with 2015.

In 2016, a total of 576 million euros of financial assistance was available within the scope of the Upgrading Training Assistance Act.

Germany Scholarship

25.500 students received a Germany Scholarship in 2016

In 2016, 25.500 students received a Germany Scholarship in accordance with the Scholarship Programme Act. This figure, as the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports, represented an 5% year-on-year rise in the number of scholarship holders.
