17% of the population with academic degree

In 2016 a good 53% of those aged 15 years and over held a "higher-level" general school certificate: 23% had earned an intermediate school certificate and 31% a higher education entrance qualification (university/for university of applied sciences). In the age bracket of 20 to 29-year-olds, as many as 79% had obtained such a qualification (28% an intermediate school certificate, 51% a higher education entrance qualification). In contrast, 15% of those aged 60 years and over had successfully completed intermediate school, 19% had graduated from grammar school.

As to their vocational qualification, almost one in two (47%) said in 2016 that they had successfully completed an apprenticeship/vocational training under the dual system. 8% of the population had a trade and technical school certificate, another 1% a trade and technical school certificate of the former GDR and 17% an academic degree (Bachelor's, Master's, Diplom degree, doctoral degree). 27% of 30 to 39-year-olds held such an academic degree, as well as 21% of 40 to 49-year-olds, 18% of 50 to 64-year-olds and 12% of those aged 65 years and over. The share of the population which did not (yet) have a vocational qualification amounted to 26%.
