Only 21% of the first-semester students in engineering sciences were women in 2014

The proportion of women among new entrants in tertiary education varied considerably between some fields of study in 2014 both at OECD level and in Germany. The proportion of female entrants in tertiary education was especially low in engineering, manufacturing and construction (Germany: 21%; OECD average: 24%).

16% of the population with academic degree

In 2015 a good 52% of those aged 15 years and over held a "higher-level" general school certificate: 23% had earned an intermediate school certificate and 29% a higher education entrance qualification (university/for university of applied sciences).
