In the year 2008 costs of illness of about 3,100 euro per capita occurred in Germany for the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and care of diseases and accidents – altogether this corresponded to an amount of 254.3 billion euro. About half (50.7%) of the entire costs of illness – in the year 2008 this was approximately 129 billion euro – distributed itself on only four disease categories. Thereby, the highest costs resulted from cardiovascular diseases (37 billion euro).
