Expenditure and personnel

The health expenditure accounts determine the expenditure made in the health care system by funding source (public budgets, statutory health insurance funds, etc.), institution and benefit. The cost-of-illness accounts cover the costs directly related to an illness.

The health personnel accounts provide information on the people working in the health care system, including data on their age, sex and occupation.

Information on the cost structure data in the medical sector is available under services.

Health status, health care

The statistics on the health status provide data on sick people and persons injured in accidents, on smoking habits of the population and on body size and weight. Other information available here refers to accidents, violence and self-injury of children and juveniles.

For hospitals and prevention or rehabilitation facilities, information is available on

  • facilities, beds and patient flows,
  • medical and non-medical staff,
  • diagnoses, and
  • operations and procedures.

In addition, hospital statistics provide data on the costs of hospitals.

The abortion statistics give an overview of the number and development of abortions. Selected aspects of life of the women concerned are covered, such as age and marital status. In addition, the statistics provide data on the legal requirements for abortion and on the type of intervention.

Causes of death

The causes of death statistics cover all deaths in Germany and their causes. Data are available on the number of deaths and on the most frequent causes of death for men, women and children. In addition, the statistics provide further information on individual causes of death such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer or suicides.

Data on deaths are available under "population", and information on traffic accident fatalities under traffic accidents.

Disabled persons, long-term care

The statistics of severely disabled persons comprises information on the number, age and sex of severely disabled persons. Also, data are available on the kind, cause and degree of disablement. Additional data on disabled persons are generally collected every four years in the microcensus.

More and more children and young people suffer from depression

On the occasion of World Health Day on 7 April, this year the World Health Organization (WHO) has put the focus on depression. In Germany, roughly 263,000 patients suffering from depression received full in-patient treatment in 2015. The number of treatment cases more than doubled since the turn of the millennium when there were 110,000 cases.

The patients treated included roughly 4,600 children and young people under 15 years who received in-patient treatment due to depression. Although their proportion in the total of treatment cases was rather small (2%), the increase in the absolute number of cases in this age group was particularly strong in the last few years. Compared with 2000, the number increased more than tenfold (2000: 410 cases).

In the age group of the 15 to 24 year olds, too, a large increase was observed: In 2000, there were roughly 5,200 patients treated on a full in-patient basis, while the number was nearly seven times as high (roughly 34,300) in 2015.
