Microdata from the sample survey of income and expenditure
For information on the options available for accessing EVS microdata please visit the web pages of the Research data centres of the Federal Statistical Office and the statistical offices of the Länder (only in German). An application form is available for download there which will make it easier for us to handle your enquiry or order. Access may be granted to formally anonymised microdata for controlled remote execution and to de facto anonymised microdata for off-site use and on-site use in safe centres for guest researchers.

Microdata for controlled remote data execution
Such microdata are formally anonymised original data. The users of controlled remote execution receive structural data records (dummy files) which resemble the original material with regard to structure and variable values. Using these dummy files, evaluation programs can be prepared which the statistical offices subsequently use to evaluate the original data. After a confidentiality check has been made, the data users receive the results of the analysis.

De facto anonymised microdata (scientific use files)
Scientific use files (SUF's) of the EVS survey are de facto anonymised microdata (cf. Article 16 para. 6 of the Federal Statistics Law), which can be made available to domestic scientists under certain legal conditions. Upon request, scientific use files of the EVS survey may be provided in safe centres, too.

De facto anonymised basic files are available for 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. The basic files available for the EVS surveys of 1978 and 1983 are fully anonymised. As Article 16 para. 6 of the Federal Statistics Law does not apply to survey years before 1988, the respective data items have been fully anonymised, with the age of the data being an essential criterion of anonymisation. The techniques of anonymisation are documented in the anonymisation measures.

For a complete listing of all basic files and the related metadata please refer to the pages of the Research data centres of the Federal Statistical Office and the statistical offices of the Länder (only in German)
