The number of couples who married in 2015 was 400,000.

Since 1 August 2001, same-sex partners have had the possibility of putting their relationship on a legal footing by establishing a registered life partnership. In 2015, 7,401 life partnerships were registered.

In Germany, 162,397 married couples divorced in 2016, representing a decrease of just under 1,000, or 0.6%, on the previous year. In most cases, the divorce was preceded by a one-year period of separation of the partners (82.6%).

A marriage can either end by the death of one of the partners or is dissolved by court order. Dissolutions of marriage by court order include marriages that have been annulled.

In 2016, 1,238 registered same-sex partnerships were dissolved by judicial decision in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that more life partnerships of women were dissolved than of men (women: 698 cases, men: 540 cases).
