The results of the 13th coordinated population projection which are currently available are based on the population data until 2013. The massive immigration in 2014 and especially in 2015 has changed the size and structure of the population. It is not possible yet to give a reliable assessment of how, and whether such immigration will have an impact on demographic trends. To reassess trends, a longer period is required. It is therefore not meaningful yet to perform a new population projection.

The current high immigration has only limited effects on the long-term population trends. It is mainly reflected in short-term population growth, but cannot reverse the trend towards increased population ageing. The current age structure of the population is expected to have a stronger impact on the demographic development in the next three decades than the balance of immigration to and emigration from Germany. High net immigration can however slow the pace and lessen the extent of population ageing.

The population of the eastern German non-city Länder will age considerably in the 20 years to come in spite of net immigration. Based on the 13th coordinated population projection by Länder, the number of over 64-year-olds as a share of the total population in the new Länder is expected to increase from 24% in 2013 to at least 32% by 2030. Then the proportion will rise only slightly until 2060 to a minimum of 34%.
