84,200 children and young people were taken into care in 2016

In 2016, the youth welfare offices in Germany took temporary measures for the protection of 84,200 children and young people by taking them into care. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 6,600 or 8.5% on 2015. Even though the increase was much lower than in the previous year (2015 on 2014: +61.6%), the number of temporary protective measures has nearly doubled since 2013, when it stood at 42,100.

25% more young people placed in residential care in 2015

In 2015, 49.500 children, young people and young adults were placed in residential care or in supported housing. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was an increase of 25% from a year earlier.
