Roughly 66,000 young adults were injured or killed in road traffic accidents in 2016

Every year thousands of people are harmed or even lose their lives on German roads. In 2016, nearly 400,000 people were injured or killed in approximately 2.6 million accidents recorded by the police. Risks are particularly high for young adults between 18 and 24 years who are often involved in traffic accidents as they are rather inexperienced drivers or overestimate their abilities.

The number of road users aged 18 to 24 years who were injured or killed in road traffic accidents totalled 65,900 in 2016, 435 young adults lost their lives. This means that 17% of those injured and 14% of those killed in road traffic belonged to that age group, which only accounted for 8% of the total population in 2015.

Young adults also quite often cause road traffic accidents: in 2016, one in five accidents involving personal injury (20%) with a car driver being mainly responsible was caused by a driver aged between 18 and 24 years. Men of that age group (68%) caused such accidents slightly more often than women (62%).

Comprehensive information on the subject is found in the publication "Unfälle von 18- bis 24-Jährigen im Straßenverkehr."

New digital publication on men and women in Europe

In Germany, 51% of men and 45% of women spent at least 2 ½ hours a week on regular physical activity in 2014. This gender gap was evident in almost all EU Member States. The only exception was Denmark, where a larger share of women (57%) than men (53%) exercised at least 150 minutes per week. These results are published in a new digital publication “The Life of Women and Men in Europe” released by Eurostat and all EU Member States to mark European Statistics Day on the 20th October.

The level of physical activity in Germany and Denmark was higher than in most other EU countries. On average, in the EU only 26% of women and 36% of men reported more than 150 minutes of physical exercise per week. And yet women were considerably less likely to be overweight (44%) than men (57%).

The digital publication offers a wide range of data on everyday life in Europe – from work to leisure activities, from childcare to retirement age. Interactive graphs make the comparative EU data more easily accessible.
