Enterprises with fast internet access

Nearly half (51%) of all German enterprises with internet access and a minimum of 10 persons employed had fast internet access in 2018. This refers to fixed broadband connections with a contractually agreed data transfer speed of at least 30 megabits per second (Mbps). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, as in the previous years, Germany retained its mid-table position in Europe. The average proportion of enterprises with fast internet access in the EU Member States was slightly lower (48%).

Tax declaration: average refund of 974 euros

There is still time until 31 July - but many taxpayers prefer doing their income tax declaration early in the year.

In 2014, there were roughly 24.1 million taxpayers in Germany who were subject to unlimited tax liability and received income exclusively from dependent employment and possibly from capital.

13.3 million of these taxpayers were assessed for income tax; 11.6 million of them received a tax refund. The average refund was 974 euros. Very often, the amount refunded was between 100 and 1,000 euros (59%). For 9% of those concerned, the refund was less than 100 euros. In 1% of the cases, the local tax offices refunded amounts of over 5,000 euros.

1.5 million taxpayers had to make additional payments to the local tax office, with the average amount being 10,020 euros. Just like the tax refunds, the additional payments of taxes were most often between 100 and 1,000 euros (55%). 25% of the taxpayers had to pay small amounts of less than 100 euros. Only 3% of the taxpayers were affected by large amounts of over 5,000 euros.

Current WISTA edition: connection between truck mileage and industrial production

The Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG) has developed the truck toll mileage index based on the data from truck toll collection. Can this index complement the short-term economic statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) and, especially, can it illustrate a connection between mileage and industrial production?

To examine this question, the BAG and Destatis carried out a cooperation project whose results are described in the article Digitale Prozessdaten aus der Lkw-Mauterhebung – neuer Baustein der amtlichen Konjunkturstatistiken published in the 6/2018 edition of our WISTA scientific journal. Since mid-December 2018, the truck toll mileage index has been published on the Destatis website as an unadjusted value, in a seasonally adjusted form and as a trend. At the same time, it has been integrated in the Business Cycle Monitor.
