IN FOCUS / 2017-09-20

Employment of older people is steadily increasing

One of the topics discussed in the run-up to the Bundestag election is the extension of working lives until the age of 70. The question is in how far the rising life expectancy is a burden on the social security systems and will make it necessary to raise the retirement age.

In recent years, the employment of older people has increased continuously. While roughly 30% of the 60 to 64-year-olds were in employment in 2006, that proportion had risen to half of the age group (56%) by 2016. Among the 65 to 69-year-olds, that is, among people beyond statutory retirement age, 15% were still working in 2016, up from 7% in 2006.

Differences in employment are also observed for older-aged men and women. While 61% of the men aged 60 to 64 were employed in 2016, the figure for women was just 51%. Among the 65 to 69-year-olds, 19% of the men were still working compared to just 12% of the women.
